Heat send Barons to third straight loss, 4-2

The Abbotsford Heat scored a pair of power play goals, including an insurance tally late in the third period, to complete a sweep of a two-game weekend series over the Oklahoma City Barons with a 4-2 win on Saturday at the Entertainment & Sports Centre.

The Heat have won three straight overall and own the Western Conference lead with 48 points on a 23-9-1-1 record. The Barons, 11-17-0-5, have dropped three straight and are winless in six straight road games at 0-4-0-2.

Oklahoma City jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Curtis Hamilton's first goal of the season at 7:49 of the first period. Hamilton accounted for both of the Barons' goals as his first came off rebound of a Tyler Pitlick shot off the wing. Denis Grebeshkov earned the second assist.

Abbotsford tied the score 1-1 on a late goal at 18:48 by Markus Granlund, who moved halfway up the ice, faked left and shot a knuckler high glove side past Richard Bachman. Max Reinhart and Brady Lamb with the assists.

Abbotsford took its first lead of the game on a power play at 17:09 of the second period as Ben Street, who had four assists last night, whipped a pass through the crease to Corban Knight, who put it home from point blank range. Ben Hanowski with the second assist.

The Barons out-shot the Heat in all three periods, 12-11 in the first, 11-10 in the second and 11-5 in the third (34-26 for the game).

Abbotsford gained a 3-1 lead at 10:31 of the third when Lane MacDermid stuffed home a pass from Carter Bancks. The Barons answered 15 seconds later at 10:46 as Hamilton drove a shot from the wing past the glove side of Joni Ortio, who improved to 15-2-0. Brad Hunt and Martin Gernat had the assists.

Sven Baertschi provided the insurance with a power play tally at 18:43 on setups by Knight and Street. The Heat were 3-for-7 on the power play, while the Barons went 0-for-3.

Bachman fell to 4-8-2.

The Barons' next game is New Years Eve at the Cox Center at 6 pm CST against the Texas Stars.
