TONIGHT Stockton travels down to Ontario to take on the Reign in the second half of the home-and-home series after Stockton took the Reign down 6-2 on Wednesday at Stockton Arena. The Heat have gone 3-2-1 against their SoCal rival but fell in overtime the last time the team played at Citizens Business Bank Arena back on New Year's Eve.
The sixth placed Heat can move to a .510 points-percentage with a win tonight, which could move the team to fifth in the division pending the outcome of the Tucson at San Diego game as the Roadrunners currently sit fifth with a .510 points-percentage.
TOMORROW The Heat are right back at it tomorrow night on home ice for Star Wars Night at Stockton Arena with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. for a game you won't want to miss. LAST TIME VS. ONTARIO Keith Aulie got the game going in Stockton's favor as did he and the defense, holding Ontario to zero shots midway through the first.
Stockton would explode for four goals in the second including two from Mark Jankowski and get another in the third en route to the 6-2 win. Stockton also played the majority of the game with 16 skaters after losing Brett Kulak and Hunter Smith to injury.
WHO TO WATCH We like the odds of Matt Frattin continuing his season-long four-game point streak that he currently finds himself on.
After a stretch where the Heat had trouble scoring and nearly everyone was on a scoreless stretch, Frattin emerged from his seven-game scoreless drought and now has points in five of his last six, including the 6 points (2-4-6) that he has on his current streak.
The last game against Ontario may have been one of his best as Frattin recorded three primary assists including two on the power play to help kickstart the unit to the best game a man up that they have had since New Year's Eve.
We like Frattin's chances tonight against the Reign.
JANKO ROASTS THE REIGN The Heat's leading goal and point scorer Mark Jankowski played another great game for the Heat on Wednesday recording two goals and adding an assist for his eighth multi-point game of the year and his third three-point night of the season.
In addition, Jankowski recorded his fourth game winner of the season which leads the Heat.
HEAT SPECIAL TEAMS The Heat power play may have had a rough go of it to start 2017 but things are starting to get better for the Heat.
For the first time since December 30 and 31 against the Reign, the Heat have back-to-back games with power-play goals going 3 for their last 10 chances. Stockton has now gone 5 for 74 in 2017.
The Heat are 7 for 27 on the power play against Ontario this season (25.9%), their best percentage against any team this season.
The Heat penalty kill killed off 25-straight power-play chances before Ontario scored on the power play on Wednesday.
HEATING UP Linen Vey has recorded multi-point games in four of his last five games (1-1|1-1|0-0|0-2|1-2), leading the Heat with 10 multi-point efforts this season. Since being assigned on February 21, Garnet Hathaway has picked up 5 points (1-4-5) in his four games played including a multi-point effort on Sunday (1-1-2) and again on Wednesday (0-2-2).
BUSY MARCH STARTS WITH THIRD HOME-AND-HOME OF THE YEAR The Heat play a tied season high 13-games (November) in March and so far are 1-0-0-0 on the month with 8 road games (counting tonight) and four home games remaining on the schedule for the month. The team kicks off their third home-and-home series of the season and look for the fortunes to change.
Each previous home-and-home resulted in a loss the first night and an overtime loss the following night. The Heat have already captured the win on Wednesday against the Reign.
HEAT EXPLODE IN SECOND, SET AND TIE TEAM RECORDS The Heat had a great second period on Wednesday, exploding for four goals, tying a team record most goals in a single period (occurred four times all-time).
The Heat set a new team record with three goals in 2:53, shaving off 43 seconds from the previous record set during the team's Teddy Bear Toss on January 21. That wasn't the only record though as the Heat's third and fourth goals from Mark Jankowski and Morgan Klimchuk were just 15 seconds apart, shaving off four seconds of the previous record also set back on January 21.
INTERESTING FACT With Linden Vey's power-play goal and assist in the last game, Vey leads the team with 13 power-play points, four of which have been goals.
