Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa - At least five future National Hockey League players were members of the 2013/14 Waterloo Black Hawks when the team won the United States Hockey League's Anderson Cup and set a club record with 44 victories that season..
Beginning on Friday night, you can re-live some of the most memorable moments of that year when the first of six games is rebroadcast as it originally aired on 1650, The Fan. For the next three weekends, tune in each Friday and Saturday night beginning at 7 p.m. for a different game from the 2013/14 archive. This nostalgic look back at the best of the Black Hawks can also be heard online at 1650thefan.com.
"As 1650, The Fan, continues to look for ways to best serve its listeners during the COVID-19 pandemic, rebroadcasting these classic 2013/14 Black Hawks games is a no-brainer," said 1650, The Fan, Program Director Cole Bair. "While we are all eagerly awaiting the return of live sports, we're excited to re-engage the fond memories of this special season of Black Hawks hockey."
Goaltender Cal Petersen, defensemen Brandon Montour and Mark Friedman, and forwards Zach Sanford and Patrick Russell were all Black Hawks in 2013/14. This winter - just six years later - all of them appeared in the National Hockey League. Several other members of that club skated in the American Hockey League during 2020, on the cusp of joining the most prolific group of Waterloo players to ever reach hockey's highest level.
In addition, four 2013/14 Black Hawks went on to skate for NCAA championship teams: Hayden Shaw (North Dakota, 2016), Cameron Johnson (North Dakota, 2016), Tyson McLellan (Denver, 2017), and Peter Krieger (Minnesota-Duluth, 2018 and 2019).
"We thank our friends and partners at KCNZ for bringing these games back when so many of us are missing Black Hawks hockey," said Black Hawks President of Business Operations Joe Greene. "It feels like playoff time, and tuning in will give us all a little taste of what we are missing."
For two decades, Black Hawks games have aired live on 1650, The Fan, in the Cedar Valley with live coverage of the full home and away schedule. The station is also home to Chicago Cubs baseball, Iowa State Cyclone athletics, NFL football, and select national broadcasts of college football and basketball.
