Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
MUSKEGON, MI - The Muskegon Lumberjacks completed Phase I of the 2020 USHL Draft on Monday, selecting nine 2004-born players. Combined with Owen Mehlenbacher and Ivan Miroshnichenko, Muskegon's two tenders, the Jacks now have 11 first-year eligible players.
Muskegon drafted four forwards, four defensemen, and one goaltender; the nine picks came from seven different states and two Canadian provinces.
"We're very excited about this draft class," said President of Hockey Operations Steve Lowe. "We got some really good hockey players today. We're excited about the talent we acquired."
"I thought that Steve Lowe, coach Hamilton, the scouting staff, and the whole organization was very well prepared," said General Manager Jimmy McGroarty. "We knew the needs of our team and were able to fill them. I've been a part of this 2004 class and it was fun to watch names go off the board today."
McGroarty offered his thoughts on the Jacks' top two selections of the draft- defensemen Nathan McBrayer and Jeremiah Slavin.
"These two are opposite players," said McGroarty. "McBrayer is a great offensive presence, skates really well, and he figures to be an offensive producer for us in the future. Slavin, on the other hand, is a big bodied defender, a guy who will play against our opponent's top line. His family has an outstanding pedigree, with his oldest brother Jaccob playing in the NHL for Carolina and middle brother Josiah playing NCAA hockey with Colorado College. They're a great hockey family and we're thrilled to have Jeremiah on board."
Muskegon will make 19 selections tomorrow in the Phase II draft, when all eligible age groups are up for grabs. Phase II begins at 2:00pm EST on Tuesday.
Here is a rundown of all nine picks made by Muskegon, including position, goals-assists-points, games played and 2019-2020 team.
