Hawks Win Third Straight 3-0 Over VAN

Portland Winterhawks News Release

Portland, Ore. - Josh Zakreski, Josh Davies and James Stefan each found twine and Nick Avakyan turned aside all 14 shots for his first career shutout as the Winterhawks topped the Vancouver Giants 3-0 on Sunday night.

The Winterhawks have now won three straight games and sit at 23-10-1-1 on the year, good for the top point percentage in the U.S. Division.

Zakreski opened the scoring with the first period's only goal at 9:29. After collecting a breakout pass from Tyson Jugnauth as he streaked through the neutral zone, Zakreski pulled the puck between his legs to get past the Vancouver defender before wrapping the puck around the net on his backhand for the early lead.

A tense, scoreless second saw both teams hit the third with plenty to play for. But a Davies deflection at 9:13 effectively sealed Portland's win as he netted his 14th of the year. Then, after firing the initial shot on Davies' goal, Stefan iced the win with an empty-netter at 17:08.

Vancouver's Brett Mirwald put in a herculean effort for the visitors with 50 saves on 52 shots, but Avakyan's shutout backstopped the Hawks' third win of the week.

The Winterhawks are back in action on home ice next Friday at 7:00 P.M. against the Everett Silvertips.
