Boise Hawks News Release
In a back-and-forth game, the Boise Hawks got the final run. A base-hit by Matt Hearn in the top of the 9th inning scored Cole Anderson and the Boise Hawks (14-11) hung on to a 7-6 win over the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (14-11).
The win marks Boise's 3rd straight series victory and they are now tied for 2nd place with Salem-Keizer in the Northwest League South.
The Hawks struck first in the first frame. After both Matt Hearn and Terrin Vavra singled to begin the game, with Hearn on third base, it was a sacrifice fly for Kyle Datres to get Boise a 1-0 lead.
Boise wanted more in the 2nd inning. It was Cole Anderson with his 2nd home run of the year after Jeff Bohling singled and Hidekel Gonzalez reached base on an error. The Hawks led 4-0 and knocked Volcanoes starter Jake Wong out of the game after just 1.1 innings.
But Salem-Keizer came back quickly in the 4th. After Hawks starter Alec Byrd retired the first nine batters he faced, Joey Bart arrived to the plate with the bases-loaded and the number two overall selection in this years MLB draft hit a grand slam to tie the game at four.
The Volcanoes added another run off Byrd when Mikey Edie had an RBI-single to give Salem-Keizer a 5-4 advantage. Byrd finished with four innings pitched, allowing five runs and striking out two.
But the Boise Hawks wouldn't give up. In the 7th inning, with Aubrey McCarty on first base and a hit-and-run situation applied by Hawks Manager Scott Little, Hidekel Gonzalez doubled down the right-field line to tie the game at five.
Then on the final pitch that walked Cole Anderson, Hidekel Gonzalez took off for third and the ball got into left field on a throwing error by the catcher Bart. Gonzalez would come home and the Hawks took a 6-5 advantage.
After Jefry Valdez worked two scoreless innings, Joel Condreay worked a shutout in the 7th inning. But in the 8th, with Boby Johnson on the mound, Diego Rincones doubled and it was a Robinson Medrano single that tied the game at seven.
In the 9th inning, with two outs Cole Anderson drew a walk. With Anderson aboard, he stole 2nd base. Matt Hearn got his third hit of the game on a single to left and it scored Anderson to make it a 7-6 Boise lead.
In the 9th inning, PJ Poulin came in for his 2nd save of the season. Poulin got the first two outs and after allowing a base-hit to Jose Layer, Poulin got a strikeout to end the night.
Boise goes to 14-11 on the season and will have a day-off tomorrow.
The Hawks will return home for a five-game series against the Vancouver Canadians starting on July 11th. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. Get your tickets at BoiseHawks.com or call 208-322-5000.
