Vancouver Canadians News Release
(Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium - Vancouver, B.C.) - After getting no-hit by the Spokane Indians over the first four innings of Monday's series finale, a 62-minute rain delay washed away the Canadians offensive woes as DH Chris Bec slammed a two-run home run in the bottom of the 5th inning to help push Vancouver to a fifth consecutive rain-shortened victory. Monday's game was called in the bottom of the 6th as Mother Nature opened the skies for a second time dumping enough water on the field to help Vancouver complete a three-game sweep of Spokane sending the Canadians to 13-12 (.520) on the season.
Canadians starter RHP Jose Espada (1-3) pitched five scoreless innings with fluctuating weather conditions even absorbing a 62-minute rain delay between the 2nd and 3rd innings but managed to secure his first win of the season. RHP Juan Nunez pitched a scoreless 6th inning to secure the Canadians 13th victory of the season and fifth straight win.
The game was called in the bottom of the 6th inning with two outs as 3B Bryan Lizardo had just struck out with the rain becoming more and more of a factor. Seconds after the strikeout, umpire Nolan Early called the Indians off the field inducing a second rain delay which led to the game coming to an end after a quick assessment of the rain-soaked field.
Vancouver's win comes alongside Tri-City's victory over Everett meaning that the C's and Dust Devils now share top spot in the North with matching 13-12 records, Everett falls a game back at 12-13 and Spokane falls to 0-11 (.000) away from home and 8-17 (.320) overall, five games back of Vancouver and the Dust Devils.
The Canadians now embark on a nine-day, eight-game road trip that sees Vancouver play a five-game series at Memorial Stadium in Boise, Idaho against the Hawks starting July 11th at 6:15pm pacific. Vancouver then heads into Pasco, Washington (July 16-18) to face North Division co-leader Tri-City in a crucial three-game series that could decide the North Division first-half pennant.
Vancouver Canadians Baseball returns to Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium on Thursday, July 19th at 7:05pm as the C's open the final series of the first-half with the Hillsboro Hops, minor league affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Tickets are currently available by calling 604.872.5232, online at www.canadiansbaseball.com or by visiting the Nat Bailey Stadium Box Office at 4601 Ontario Street, Vancouver, B.C.
