Hawks Strike for Six Again

For the second consecutive night, the Waterloo Black Hawks scored six goals to earn a home ice win at Young Arena; Saturday they defeated USA Hockey's National Team Development Program 6-1.

On Friday, Waterloo had defeated the Muskegon Lumberjacks 6-5 in in overtime during a wild game which nearly slipped away late. Saturday, they were on top the whole way.

Griffin Ness blasted the Black Hawks to the lead early. During a power play 3:31 into the game, Jacob Bengtsson set up the Waterloo captain for a shot from the left circle. Ness beat Gibson Homer sliding from left-to-right. It was the seventh point of the weekend for Ness, who had a hat trick plus three assists Friday.

After intermission, another goal early in a period doubled the Hawks' lead. Dane Montgomery's chance was denied, but he went behind the net to generate another opportunity. Montgomery spilled the puck to Wyatt Schingoethe; his touch-feed clicked with Quinn Rudrud, who fired a shot in off the crossbar at 1:09.

Waterloo broke the game open with an outburst in the third period. The surge started when Schingoethe set up Ryan Drkulec at 3:02. Schingoethe retrieved an errant shot behind the cage to create Drkulec's chance from the top of the crease.

Just over two minutes later, Ness swiped a puck near his own blue line and scooted up the ice to capitalize on a breakaway backhander. Then Keighan Gerrie hit the top corner at 6:53, squeezing in a shot from a challenging angle below the right faceoff dot.

Drkulec added one more power play goal at 10:40, pouncing on a puck which had sprung off the end boards on Xander Lamppa's attempt in transition.

Goaltender Logan Stein was less than two minutes from securing a shutout when the NTDP's Jeremy Wilmer redirected a pass during a late power play; just 1:22 remained. Stein made 18 saves for the win.

The Black Hawks are on the road next weekend for a pair of games against the Sioux Falls Stampede.
