Dubuque Falters in 4-2 Loss against Lincoln

January 25, 2020 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

Two goals from Travis Treolar and a strong forecheck were keys in a 4-2 win for the Lincoln Stars over the Fighting Saints on Saturday night. Dubuque could not manage a victory in their final game of a three in three, as their third period push was too little too late. The weekend was successful overall for Dubuque, who took four of a possible six points. Lincoln grabbed their 17th win of the season in the victory Saturday.

-Treolar scored one of the nicest goals of the USHL season to open the scoring. He pulled the lacrosse move behind the net and slipped the puck past Aidan McCarthy. Treolar then scored shortly after to make it 2-0 Lincoln before the midway mark of the first.

-Dubuque relinquished the first 13 shots on net before taking their first of the game. Lincoln came out firing and caught the Saints on their heels. Dubuque was held without a shot through the first 10:22 of the game.

-The Saints scored off the rush, as Matthew Kopperud potted a backhander over the shoulder of the Lincoln netminder. The goal was Kopperud's 13th of the season and gave him his 30th point of the campaign as well.

-Lincoln effectively won the game in the second period, with two goals towards the midway mark. The Stars carried a three-goal cushion in to the third period.

-Dubuque had their best period to close out the game and it started with an early power play goal from Braden Doyle. Doyle whipped a wrister into the top corner just two minutes in to the period. The goal gave the Saints life, but they weren't able to get anything else in to the back of the net.

-Lincoln's defense, which has struggled this season, didn't look like that was the case after the early Dubuque goal. The Stars dumped and chased for most of the third period and did so effectively. Dubuque's chances were limited all third period due to the style of play thrown at them by Lincoln.

-Despite the loss, the Saints still climbed in to second place in the East over the weekend. They are two points ahead of Team USA with five games in hand.

-The Saints will get some much-needed rest before they take the ice again. Dubuque does so against Des Moines, who they are 3-0 against on the season, on Friday before they take on Madison on Saturday. Both games will be played in Dubuque.
