USHL Waterloo Black Hawks

Hawks Roll in OT Again

September 18, 2018 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

For the third time during the 2018 USHL preseason, the Waterloo Black Hawks went to overtime, coming out on top of the Omaha Lancers, 6-5 in a shootout at Young Arena.

Joey Cassetti flicked a try to the top corner and Vladislav Firstov slipped a low shot to the five-hole, while Jared Moe made two stops at the other end of the rink to churn out the win during the tie-breaker.

The shootout was the only portion of the game in which Waterloo led.

The Lancers surged to a 3-0 lead with all three first period scores separated by less than four minutes. Between the five minute and 8:47 marks, Jan Kern, Ben Perkins, and Luke Mountain all found the net in succession. Omaha outshot the Hawks 13-6 in the frame.

Waterloo had a 37-21 edge in chances from there, but Kern scored his second of the game 1:37 into the second period on a drop pass through the slot from Cooper Fensterstock, putting Omaha on top 4-0 before the Hawks' comeback began.

Cross-ice passing put the puck right at the feet of a turning Xander Lamppa, who got a goal back for Waterloo at 7:16 of the second. Whirling at the right circle hashmark, Lamppa lifted his chance by the glove of goalie Brian George. Matt Koopman added a shorthanded goal a moment before the period reached its midpoint. Finding a puck in front of the Waterloo bench, he sped to the offensive zone to fire a chance by George.

However, the Lancers converted the very same power play seconds later; Bryce Brodzinski roofed a shot from the left circle.

Undaunted, the Hawks scrambled back to within two before the period was over. A stumbling Lancer defenseman created a two-on-one situation, with Andy Stoneman slipping a pass across the top of the crease for Kyle Haskins to spike into the net on the weak side.

Six minutes into the third, Waterloo was within a goal for the first time since the opening minutes. Firstov connected with Stoneman on a behind-the-back pass, and the centerman's quick shot found net to the blocker side.

Another dynamic move by Firstov yielded the equalizer with less than four minutes to go. Sliding around a defender in the right wing circle and to the front of the net, the Russian product feathered a backhand pass to Haskins, who stuffed his second of the game into an open side.

The Black Hawks wrap up their exhibition schedule this weekend with a home-and-home series beginning in Cedar Rapids Friday evening. Then Saturday at 3 p.m., Waterloo hosts the RoughRiders for the final preseason home game at Young Arena. All seats for the Hawks' home preseason schedule are $10, and can be purchased by calling the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
