Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Two early third period goals gave the Sioux City Musketeers their largest lead of the night, and they held on late to nip the Waterloo Black Hawks 4-3 at Young Arena on Saturday.
The final period began with the visitors ahead 2-1, but the Musketeers pulled away in the first four minutes after intermission. Tabor Heaslip collected a loose puck that had come free near the left hashmark, lifting in a shot to the short side at 1:19. Dylan James made it a 4-1 game at 3:57, redirecting a feed from Owen McLaughlin, resulting in McLaughlin's third assist of the game.
Waterloo's comeback bid began to gain traction at 11:35. Goalie Emmett Croteau lofted a puck from near his net to the center line, where Jacob Jeannette gloved it down. All three Hawks forwards then had possession in quick succession: Jeannette to Connor Brown to Ray Fust, who scored on a low attempt from the high slot.
Cooper Wylie's dynamic rush helped bring Waterloo within a goal as 5:04 remained. Wylie sped up left wing boards and behind the net, coming out the other side to trigger a shot from the right circle. That try was knocked down, but Jake Rozzi stuffed in the rebound.
Waterloo's best chance to add a final goal was denied by the post; Tyler Procious took the shot that drew iron in the waning minutes. Croteau spent the last 2:49 on the bench as the Hawks skated with an extra attacker to no avail.
Sioux City had outshot the Hawks 10-4 in the scoreless opening period, and Waterloo had a few close calls in the defensive zone. The narrowest escape came when a puck hit Croteau's right pad, then the post before sliding across the crease. Ben Robertson was able to poke it out of harm's way in the nick of time.
Sioux City broke through for two in the second period. The first came during a power play at 4:05. Charlie Schoen came up the ice to trigger the shot from the right circle, sending the low chance between Croteau's pads. Schoen struck again in transition at 8:24. The rush developed off a shot block at the other end of the rink, and Schoen finished his chance from the top of the Waterloo crease.
The Hawks generated a healthy number of chances in the late minutes of the period and capitalized at 15:31. Waterloo sprang up the ice three-on-two, and Jeannette accelerated toward the left hashmark, wiring a wrister past Axel Mangbo's blocker.
Mangbo claimed the win with 24 saves, while Croteau turned aside 25 Sioux City chances.
Saturday represented the midpoint of a season-long five-game home sequence at Young Arena. Next weekend, the Hawks host the Fargo Force on Friday and Saturday to wrap up the homestand. During the two games, Waterloo will wear John Deere-themed jerseys, which will be auctioned at the end of the weekend to benefit the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.
