Hawks Claim Shootout Win
January 29, 2022 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Garrett Schifsky saved the day, then Gavin O'Connell put the Waterloo Black Hawks over the top for a 3-2 shootout win at Young Arena Saturday against the Omaha Lancers.
Waterloo trailed for the equivalent of a full period before Tyler Procious came up with a creative way to beat Kevin Pasche. With 5:20 to play, Jacob Jeannette gained control of the puck on the right wing boards and dropped it back to the point. From there, Procious put a shot intentionally wide off the end wall, angling it to the slot. Schifsky found the carom and caught Pasche momentarily out of position, scoring a goal for the fifth consecutive game.
The teams remained knotted at 2-2 for the rest of regulation and overtime. Even the shootout extended past the allotted three attempts. After Emmett Croteau denied Omaha's Garrett Wright in the fourth round, O'Connell provided the decisive conversion. Carrying the puck up the slot, he pulled to his right, squeezing his chance past Pasche's left skate as the netminder stretched, trying to reach the stuff attempt.
Waterloo outshot Omaha 30-28 in regulation and overtime, including a dozen chances in the final period. Croteau made 26 saves for the win.
More than half of the game had passed before either team dented the net. At 10:21 of the second period, O'Connell stepped across the blue line on left wing and zipped an attempt toward Pasch from the circle. Pasch tried to blocker the puck aside, but it went off of his equipment and across the goal line.
The Hawks lead lasted less than three minutes. At 13:04, Morgan Winters was camped in the slot; when the puck came his way from the right wing, Winters let go of a quick chance over Croteau's right shoulder. Then the Lancers went to the lead at 14:22, thanks to Chris Hedden's power play one-timer from the left point.
Now 2-0-0 during a five-game homestand, Waterloo hosts another of the teams dueling for second place in the USHL Western Conference Saturday: the Sioux City Musketeers. The 6:05 p.m. game at Young Arena is Superhero Night, presented by Christie Door Company. For tickets, call the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office or visit tickets.waterlooblackhawks.com.
