Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Down 2-0, 3-2 and 4-3, the Dubuque Fighting Saints found a way to tie the game each time and send the game to overtime. However, the homestanding Cedar Rapids RoughRiders got a goal from their captain, Adam Flammang, in the second round of the shootout to pick up the win 5-4 over the Fighting Saints on Friday night at The Stable.

Flammang busted down the middle of the ice in the second round of the shootout and ripped a shot five hole on Fighting Saints goaltender Philip Svedebäck for the only marker of the skills competition. Cedar Rapids goaltender Conor Hasley denied Kenny Connors, Ryan Beck and Connor Kurth to seal the win for the home team.

Dubuque would not go away in the third period. The third period was full of back-and-forth play. A miss by the RoughRiders proved costly, as the Fighting Saints took the play the other way and converted. Connors rushed the puck up ice on the wing and feathered the pass to a wide-open Tristan Lemyre who tied the game at two apiece.

The tie game lasted 26 seconds. Flammang took matters into his own hands off of a turnover and posted a goal to put the Riders up 3-2. But once again, the Saints would not go away quietly. Hard work from Saints captain Riley Stuart got the puck out to the point for Samuel Sjölund who fired a shot from the wing that escaped the reach of Hasley to tie the game at three.

Cedar Rapids got another one just as a penalty expired with seven minutes to go in the third period as Joe Fleming's shot evaded everything except the back of the net. However, once again, the Fighting Saints utilized a power play opportunity late in regulation to get it tied again. At 14:53, Connor Kurth wheeled a backhander from behind the net and got a friendly bounce to score his 20th goal of the season and tie the game at four.

Cedar Rapids' quick-strike offense got them ahead by a pair of goals in the second period. Zaccharya Wisdom picked up the rebound of a Nate Hanley shot from a sharp angle and scored to open things up at 3:28. That goal was scored at 4-on-4, and the ensuing power play proved fruitful for Cedar Rapids, as Eric Pohlkamp notched a point shot goal just 48 seconds later.

William Hallén brought Dubuque back to within one with a strong individual effort. His initial stuff chance at one side of the goal failed, so his wraparound backhander on the other side caught a Cedar Rapids defender's skate and bounced into the back of the net to get the score to 2-1 heading into the second intermission.

Both teams played to a scoreless first period.

The Saints are back in action Saturday, January 29 against the Madison Capitols at 7:05 p.m.
