Hawks Prevail with Four-Goal Finish

Four goals in the third period were the difference as the Waterloo Black Hawks fought off the Sioux City Musketeers 7-3 at Young Arena Saturday.

The win came 24 hours after a season-high eight goals during an 8-0 road win against the Lincoln Stars. With 15 goals on the weekend, Waterloo surpassed their scoring total from the prior five games combined. All of Saturday's goals by the home team were recorded at even strength.

For the second consecutive night, the Black Hawks struck for three goals within the first seven minutes of the game. The spurt started when Matt Cameron setup Joe Cassetti at 1:33; Cameron's pass came from behind the Musketeer net, and Cassetti squeezed a shot between Ben Kraws and the post to his left.

Dane Montgomery capitalized on a turnover less than four minutes later, zipping into the offensive zone to send a shot under the crossbar. Then at 6:35, the Hawks made it 3-0; Emil Ohrvall tied up a defenseman on the left wing boards, and Griffin Ness was the beneficiary. Coming on a change, Ness picked up the puck, moved to the slot, and fired in his shot.

Sioux City sent the game to intermission with a 3-1 count thanks to a Marcus Kallionkieli goal, which resulted from a faceoff win in the left circle as 38.1 seconds remained.

In the second, the visitors' rally continued. A give-and-go passing play in transition created Kallionkeili's second goal of the night during the final seconds of a power play. Parker Ford was the pivot during that exchange of pucks at 5:43. Bobby Brink got the equalizer nearly two minutes later, stealing a clearing attempt and cutting to the net through the right circle.

A deadlock prevailed until 5:14 of the third, when Vladislav Firstov circled back to take a handoff from Hank Sorensen near the Waterloo blue line. Speeding up the ice, Firstov rifled a shot past relief netminder Jake Sibell's stick and into the net.

The Hawks were able to pull away from there. Cassetti recorded his second of the evening at 8:17, pushing the puck past Sibell's left skate after a notable effort by Kyle Haskins. With all five Musketeer defenders back inside the blue line, Haskins came up left wing, turning behind the net and into the right circle, before slinging the puck across the slot to Cassetti, who was moving up the rink after a change.

Ryan Drkulec built the lead farther, with a shot that trickled in at 12:24. Ohrvall capped the effort, scoring an empty-netter from in front of his own goal with 4:31 left to play.

The Hawks are on the road next for a two-game weekend against the Fargo Force.
