Sioux City Musketeers News Release
WATERLOO, IA - The Musketeers made the drive to Waterloo for a big game against the Black Hawks on Saturday night. Sioux City was in search of a much-needed win. The Musketeers showed a lot of fight in this one but a big 3rd period for Waterloo would push them past Sioux City. Final score 7-3.
This one would get off to an ugly start for the Musketeers. Waterloo scored just 1:33 on Joe Cassetti's 14th goal of the season. The Black Hawks extended their lead three minutes later on a quick shot by Dane Montgomery. It took just over a minute for Waterloo to add to their lead, making it 3-0 in the first 6:35 of action.
Ben Kraws was pulled after the Black Hawks third goal, giving Jake Sibell a chance to calm things down. Sioux City managed to keep Waterloo off the board the rest of the period and finally got some life with just 40 seconds to play in the period.
Parker Ford won a faceoff in the Waterloo zone and pulled it back to Marcus Kallionkieli who immediately ripped it past Logan Stein to bring the Musketeers back within two.
It turns out, that momentum would be huge for the Musketeers as they headed into the 2nd period.
Marcus Kallionkieli netted his second goal of the game on the powerplay just 5:43 into the frame. Parker Ford made an excellent deke and walked around a defender setting up a 2 on 0 with Kallionkieli. Ford wasted no time dishing the puck to Kallionkieli who buried it to bring the Musketeers back within one.
The Musketeers would continue to push and were rewarded at the end of a terrific sequence in the Black Hawk zone. Sioux City did an excellent job of keeping the puck in the offensive zone, and eventually, Anthony Kehrer made a great poke check out of desperation that sent the puck to a wide-open Bobby Brink. Brink skated in on net before firing an incredible shot to the high near side corner over the shoulder of Stein to tie the game at three. Waterloo would pull Stein after the goal and Evan Fear managed to shut out the Musketeers the rest of the period.
The Musketeers failed to capitalize on their momentum from the 2nd period, and it wouldn't take long for Waterloo to re-gain the lead in the 3rd. Vladislav Firstov scored at the 5:20 mark of the 3rd period, and his goal would be plenty for Waterloo in this one. The Black Hawks added three more goals in the period, including an empty netter, to skate to a comfortable 7-3 victory.
With the loss the Musketeers fall to 21-17-5-2 and now have to worry about the Omaha Lancers who are quickly gaining ground in the Western Conference playoff race.
The Musketeers face another tough task tomorrow afternoon when the Stampede return to close out the weekend. Puck drop set for 3:05 pm.
