Flying Aces Rise Above Gamblers with 3-1 Win

GREEN BAY, Wisc. - The Central Illinois Flying Aces outmuscled the Green Bay Gamblers, winning 3 to 1 in a true team effort tonight.
Central Illinois scored the first goal of the game 6:23 into the first period on the power play. Colby Enns (Minot, ND) began the play by skating the puck out of the defensive zone. Enns passed over to Connor Mayer (Champlin, Minn.) on the left wing. Mayer drove the puck behind the net, but dropped a pass back to Tate Singleton (West Lebanon, NH) at the side of the net. The Ohio State University commit banked in his nineteenth of the season off the Green Bay netminder.
The Flying Aces controlled play for the majority of the second period including a lengthy shift in the Green Bay zone. On the following shift, Singleton brought the puck back into the zone, toe-dragged the puck so that Chad Hillebrand (Skokie, Ill.) and a Green Bay player screened the goaltender and wristed the puck top-shelf for his second of the game. Hillebrand also tallied an assist on the goal.
Joe Dunlap (Windham, NH) increased the Central Illinois lead to three at 15:50 in the second. Hillebrand won a board battle in the defensive zone and the puck popped loose. Dunlap quickly corralled the puck and found himself on a breakaway. He stayed strong on the puck as a Green Bay defender tried to stop his breakaway, but Dunlap kept control and scored.
Green Bay got on the board at 18:43 in the second on the power play. Noah Prokop was able to poke the puck past Ryan Snowden (Kennett Square, Penn.) after a shot from the point amid chaos in front of the net. This was Green Bay's Teddy Toss Night so the teams took the intermission break then while the bears were cleaned up. Snowden was injured during the Green Bay goal and was replaced by Mitchell Gibson (Phoenixville, Penn.) for the rest of the game.
The Gamblers put the pressure on during the third period, but Gibson was perfect in relief stopping all sixteen shots he faced including several when the Gamblers pulled their goaltender.
Tomorrow, the Flying Aces host the Youngstown Phantoms for Superhero Sunday Funday. On Wednesday (Feb. 27th), Central Illinois will play a rare weeknight game at Grossinger Motors Arena against the U.S. National Team Development Program Under-18 Team. This will be followed by a three-game weekend. Friday, March 1st, Central Illinois hosts Cedar Rapids. On Saturday and Sunday, they return to Green Bay for a two-game series.
