Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Jackson Cates scored twice, and that was enough to propel the Waterloo Black Hawks to a 2-1 overtime win against the Green Bay Gamblers Friday at the Resch Center.
On a power play with 33.1 seconds remaining in the extra period, Ben Copeland dashed to the puck below the icing line after a faceoff. His pass found Cates standing at the inside edge of the right circle, and Waterloo's leading scorer snapped a shot into the net from close range to win it.
The only goal of the first 40 minutes had come at 5:23 of the second. Copeland swiped a clearing attempt and brought the puck across the high slot. From the top of the right circle, Copeland's pass was tipped between the hash marks by Cates and eluded goalie Maksim Zhukov.
The 1-0 lead stood up until 1:09 remained in regulation. Nolan Moyle took control at center and navigated through the right circle to the front of the net. Moyle slipped a shot through Jared Moe for an unassisted goal.
It was the only shot which eluded Moe during the game; the University of Minnesota recruit made 34 saves as the Gamblers outshot Waterloo, 35-31.
The Hawks are back home against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on Rock 'em, Sock 'em Saturday. Bring new, unworn pairs of socks to throw onto the ice after the first Waterloo goal of the night. The footwear will be donated to House of Hope and the Cedar Valley Hospitality House to benefit homeless men, women, and children in the Cedar Valley. For tickets, call the Domino's Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
