Hawks Hold Off Blazers For 6-4 Win

Portland Winterhawks News Release

Kamloops, B.C. - The Winterhawks scored twice in each period and withstood a late Kamloops push to top the Blazers 6-4 on Wednesday, winning their third straight game and completing a sweep in the clubs' four-game season series.

Portland's record now stands at 42-15-2-1 on the year (87pts, 1st U.S. Division).

James Stefan and Kyle Chyzowski struck in the first for a 2-0 Hawks lead through 20 minutes. Stefan tallied his 43rd of the year midway through the frame with a one-time blast on the power play, while Chyzowski put on his work boots to chip home a rebound in the waning seconds of the period.

The second period seemed to be all Portland as Josh Davies and Nate Danielson scored just 16 seconds apart in the opening two minutes of the period, with Davies rifling a wrister off the rush and Danielson banking a pass off a defender's skate and into the net. The Blazers began to push back, though, through Blake Swetlikoff's odd bounce tally eight seconds after Danielson's goal and two back-to-back Jordan Keller power-play goals to open the third period.

Hudson Darby stifled the rally with the eventual game-winning goal at 4:02, though Blazers rookie Tommy Lafreniere's second career goal again made it interesting with five minutes to play. Withstanding Kamloops' pressure, Portland found the empty net through a Ryder Thompson shot that deflected off Stefan to cap off the win.

Jan Špunar made 23 saves on 27 shots for his third straight win, while the Kamloops tandem of Jesse Sanche (24/28) and Dylan Ernst (28/29) performed well on a busy night.

The Winterhawks are back in action on Saturday night at home, hosting Oregon Hockey History Night - complete with Portland Rosebuds throwback uniforms - at 6:00 P.M. against the Wenatchee Wild. The Winterhawks are back in action on the road this Tuesday against Kamloops before returning home for Oregon Hockey History Night on Saturday, March 9.
