South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
The South Bend Silver Hawks (54-55, 19-20) scored a season-high 16 runs on a season-best 22 hits Thursday en route to a 16-0 win against the Fort Wayne TinCaps with 2,609 fans on hand at Coveleski Stadium. It was the Silver Hawks strongest offensive output since scoring 19 runs on 24 hits against the TinCaps on April 10 of last season.
The Silver Hawks put an end to a season-long five-game losing streak.
The Silver Hawks hit a season-high four home runs in the game. Chris Ellison hit two long balls, while Marc Bourgeois and Roidany Aguila hit a home run apiece. The TinCaps used a pair of position players out of the bullpen; infielder Tyler Stubblefield ate up three innings, while first baseman Travis Whitmore worked the final frame.
Ellison paced the Silver Hawks, finishing 4-for-6 with three RBIs. Ryan Court, Kerry Jenkins and Aguila each added three hits. Eight of nine Silver Hawks starters amassed at least two hits.
Left-hander Andrew Barbosa (2-2) took the win for the Silver Hawks, hurling five scoreless innings of two-hit baseball. Barbosa walked four and struck out seven. Right-hander Colin Rea (3-7) was saddled with the loss, allowing six runs, two earned, on six hits over 2.1 innings. Alex Capaul earned the save, tossing four scoreless innings to close out the game.
The Silver Hawks broke the game open with a five-run second inning in which nine men came to the plate.
TinCaps right-hander Daniel Sarria was ejected after hitting Raul Navarro in the fourth inning. Right-hander Johnny Barbato relieved Sarria and tossed an inning before giving way to Stubblefield.
The Silver Hawks and TinCaps will wrap up the four-game series Friday at Coveleski Stadium. Right-hander Archie Bradley (8-5, 3.92) will take the hill for South Bend and he will be opposed by righty Ruben Mejia (1-4, 4.58). First pitch is slated for 7:35 p.m. EST.
