Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Portland Winterhawks (17-17-1-0) fell to the Tri-City Americans (15-19-2-0) 5-1 Tuesday in a game played in Kennewick, Washington.
After a scoreless first period, Tri-City's Beau McCue put the Americans up 1-0 with a power play goal 4:01 into the second period.
With 53 seconds left in the period, Caleb Jones collected the puck and fed Evan Weinger for a breakaway goal that beat netminder Nicholas Sanders to tie it at 1-1. It was Weinger's third straight game with a goal and the three-game streak is a career high for Weinger.
McCue scored his second of the game 1:39 into the third to give the Americans a 2-1 advantage. Tri-City's Vladislav Lukin then struck at the 12:37 mark of the third to make it 3-1 for the Americans.
Parker Wotherspoon scored a 5-on-3 power play goal at the 15:23 mark to extend Tri-City's lead to 4-1, and Jordan Topping added another 5-on-3 power play marker with 3:05 left in the period to seal the 5-1 win for the Americans.
The Hawks are back in action Thursday when they host the Seattle Thunderbirds in the annual New Year's game at the Moda Center with a special start time of 7:30 p.m. and a post-game skate with the Winterhawks players. Both Thursday and Saturday's games can be seen live on Portland's CW32.
