Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, MB. - The Brandon Wheat Kings closed out a 2-game Western Hockey League Holiday home stand Tuesday night with an exciting 6-5 come from behind win over the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors.

Tim McGauley's breakaway goal at the 9:52 mark of the third period was the difference as the Wheat Kings improved to 23-11-1-2 on the season and moved three points up on the Prince Albert Raiders in the battle for top spot in the Eastern Division.

McGauley's goal capped a third period rally that saw the Wheat Kings battle back from a 5-4 deficit in what was one of the most entertaining games of the year.

With the game tied at four going into the third, the Warriors took the lead three minutes in on Ryan Bowen's sixth goal of the year but Brandon's Braylon Shmyr evened the score three minutes later when he scored his third of the night.

For Shmyr, who entered the game with five goals and 12 points in 24 games, it was his first WHL hat trick.

Nolan Patrick and Tyler Coulter, who ran his career high point scoring streak to ten games, rounded out the scoring for the Wheat Kings - who outshot the Warriors 36-35. Rookie Logan Thompson improved his record to 10-1-0 with the win.

Marc McNulty scored twice in a losing cause for the Warriors, with Jesse Shynkaruk and Dryden Hunt adding the other singles.

The Wheat Kings, who ran their home ice win streak to four games, were forced to play this game shorthanded from the start and to make matters worse lost all star Jayce Hawryluk midway through the opening period when the 19-year old Roblin product was assessed a five minute major and automatic game misconduct. His questionable hit will now be reviewed by the WHL for a possible suspension.

Not in the lineup Tuesday were Tanner Kaspick, Ty Lewis and Stelio Mattheos, who are out with injury, as well as veterans Ivan Provorov and John Quenneville. Both Provorov and Quenneville are currently representing their respective countries at the World Junior Hockey Championships in Finland.

Speaking of Alberta, that's where the Wheat Kings will be heading on Wednesday for what will be a 3-game in three night road trip, with stops in Edmonton, Red Deer and Calgary, beginning New Year's Day against the Oil Kings.

Brandon's next home game will be a week from Friday - January 8th - when the Wheat Kings play host to the visiting Prince Albert Raiders.

Tickets to all of the Wheat Kings remaining home games - including the club's annual Family Skate Night on Saturday, January 9th - go back on sale Wednesday morning at the Keystone Centre box office. Fans can also order online at keystonecentre.com or by calling 726-3555.
