Hawks Fall 3-2 to Vancouver Saturday

The Portland Winterhawks (34-15-2-1) dropped a 3-2 decision to the Vancouver Giants (31-19-1-2) Saturday at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in front of 7,771 fans.

The loss snapped the team's franchise record 19-game home winning streak.

The Giants picked up the lone goal of the first period when Marek Tvrdon scored at the 13:04 mark to give Vancouver a 1-0 lead they'd take into the second period.

The Hawks evened the game 3:25 into the second period when defenseman Tyler Wotherspon scored on a shot from the slot to tie the game at 1-1. It was the only goal of the period, a frame in which the Hawks were dominant, outshooting the Giants 21-5.

Tvrdon struck again for the Giants at the 12:59 mark of the third, his second of the game, as he put Vancouver up 2-1. The Giants' lead would last less than a minute though, as Portland's Taylor Peters answered just 55 seconds later to tie the game at 2-2. But the Giants got the winner with 29.5 seconds remaining in the third on a goal by Jordan Martinook to come away with the 3-2 victory.

The Hawks held a 49-29 advantage in shots on goal Saturday. Mac Carruth stopped 26 of 29 shots, while Vancouver netminder Adam Morrison turned away 47 of Portland's 49 shots.

The Hawks are back in action Monday when they host the Giants once again at 7 p.m. in the Coliseum.
