Vancouver Giants News Release
The Vancouver Giants won their third straight game defeating the Portland Winterhawks 3-2 Saturday night at the Memorial Coliseum in Portland. The win snapped the Winterhawks franchise record 19 game home winning streak. The Giants are now 3-0-0-0 this season vs. Portland.
For a third straight game, the Giants opened the scoring, this time Marek Tvrdon found the back of the net for his 19th goal of the year. Vancouver was outshot 14-11 in the opening 20 minutes, but led 1-0.
Portland poured it on in the second period, firing shot after shot at Adam Morrison, but managed to beat the Giants goaltender just once on 21 shots in the frame. The Giants only had 5 shots of their own in the period. The game remained 1-1 through 40 minutes.
In the third period, the Giants were forced to kill off two power play opportunties vs. the top unit in the league. After doing so, Tvrdon scored his 2nd goal of the night and 20th of the season to give Vancouver a 2-1 lead with 7:01 remaining. However, the Winterhawks would respond 57 seconds later with a goal of their own to tie it up at 2-2. With the game destined for overtime, Jordan Martinook played hero, scoring with 29 seconds left in regulation to give the Giants a 3-2 win. For Martinook it was his 30th goal of the season. Morrison made 47 saves for the win, earning first star honours.
The Giants and Winterhawks will have a day off before doing it all over again Monday night at the Memorial Coliseum. Game time is 7:00 pm. The pregame show begins at 6:30 pm on AM 650.
