Portland Winterhawks News Release

Portland, Ore. - Four points from 16-year-old Ryan Miller and three from James Stefan paced a potent Portland offense as the Winterhawks downed the Kamloops Blazers 7-1 on Monday afternoon. The Winterhawks have recorded points in seven straight games and 12 of their last 13 (11-1-1-0 in that span). They sit at 26-10-2-1 on the year.

The Hawks were firing early in this one and a four-goal first period gave them a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Josh Davies started the party with his 30th goal of the campaign at 6:15 on a one-timer set up by Luca Cagnoni. Gabe Klassen made it 2-0 at the midway point of the period as he put away a feed from Stefan, who then took a Miller pass at the right circle and fired it home for a 3-0 lead at 13:22. Miller and Cagnoni picked up their second points of the period three minutes later as they chipped in assists on a Josh Zakreski rebound tally to make it 4-0.

Stefan netted his second of the contest as he lofted a loose puck over Dylan Ernst, who was in net in relief of Jesse Sanche, 8:53 into the second period. Miller grabbed his own goal quickly in the third before Ashton Ferster busted a Portland shutout bid at 6:22. With the game comfortably in hand, Diego Buttazzoni put a bow on things, finishing off some pretty passing with Miller and Marek Alscher picking up the helpers in the game's final minute.

Nick Avakyan stopped 23 of 24 Kamloops shots for his sixth win in his last seven starts. Sanche stopped 16 of 20 in the first period for the Blazers, while Ernst turned aside 28 of 31 in the final 40 minutes.

The Winterhawks now hit the road for five straight games, starting Wednesday in Kelowna before heading north to Prince George for Friday and Saturday tilts.
