Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - The South Bend Silver Hawks (36-23) picked up a 7-3 win over the Lansing Lugnuts (28-31) on Thursday night behind five unanswered runs at Cooley Law School Stadium.
The Midwest League Eastern Division-leading Silver Hawks held Lansing hitters to 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
With the Lugnuts ahead 3-2 in the fourth, a throwing error by third baseman Matt Dean opened the door for South Bend's Marty Herum to knock a three-run homer to left off of starting pitcher Chase De Jong (0-4, 4.82).
De Jong allowed five runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks, but tied a season high with five strikeouts.
South Bend added two more runs in the fifth off of reliever Adaric Kelly before the Lugnuts bullpen settled in and held South Bend off the scoreboard for the final four frames. Lansing reliever Roberto Espinosa allowed three hits in three scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Scott Silverstein had two strikeouts in the top of the ninth.
Silver Hawks starter Blayne Weller (Win, 3-3) lasted five innings, allowing three runs on five hits and a season-high four walks and five strikeouts.
A parade of relievers followed Weller, the last of whom was Silvino Bracho (Save, 9), who inherited two runners on base in the ninth and recorded the final three outs in perfect fashion to lower his ERA to 0.55.
After falling behind 2-1 in the top of the second, the Lugnuts answered with a two-run double by first baseman L.B. Dantzler, who has driven in six runs in the first two games of the series.
In the loss, Lugs shortstop Dawel Lugo extended his team-high hitting streak to 15 games while raising his batting average to .299 with a 2-for-4 night.
The Lugnuts and Silver Hawks play the rubber match of the three-game set on Friday night. Lansing sends right-hander Alberto Tirado (1-1, 5.40) to the mound, countered by South Bend righty Austin Platt (0-1, 7.85). Friday is a Flat Screen Friday at Cooley Law School Stadium, presented by Auto-Owners Insurance, with LAFCU Fireworks set to follow the game.
Tickets are available for purchase via the stadium box office, telephone at 517-485-4500 and online at lansinglugnuts.com . To sign up for Lugnuts Alerts, text LUGNUTS to 80373.
