BELOIT, WI - The Peoria Chiefs gave up five runs in the second inning and never recovered losing to the last place Beloit Snappers 9-8 on Thursday night. The loss drops the Chiefs to 31-28 on the season and with 10 games left in the first half, their Wild Card lead is down to a half game.

Peoria jumped out to an early lead against Lou Trivino. CJ McElroy Jr. led off with a single to left and stole second before Juan Herrera walked. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and McElroy scored on a RBI groundout by Carson Kelly. Ronald Castillo singled up the middle to plate Herrera for a 2-0 first-inning Chiefs lead.

Beloit answered immediately against Alex Reyes in the bottom of the inning. Herschel Powell drew a leadoff walk and Melvin Mercedes singled to right. Powell moved to third on a flyout to deep center and scored when Reyes bounced a pickoff throw past first base. With Mercedes on second, Tyler Marincov tied the game with a single to left. Reyes got back-to-back flyouts to right as Marincov was left in scoring position.

The Snappers kept the offense going in the second inning as Luis Baez and BJ Boyd both singled on consecutive pitches to start the frame. With one out Powell walked again and Mercedes singled home Baez for a 3-2 Snappers lead. Brugman singled to right and all three runners scored as the throw from right field bounced past Ronnierd Garcia at third. A wild pitch moved Brugman to third and he scored on a foul sacrifice fly to left field as the Snappers took a 7-2 lead.

McElroy reached on an error to start the third and was out at second on a fielder's choice with Kelly safe at first. Castillo clubbed a two-run homer over the center field batter's eye to cut the Beloit lead to 7-4.

Beloit added a run in the fourth without putting a ball in play. With two outs Reyes issued back-to-back five-pitch walks to Brugman and Marincov. Robert Stock came out of the bullpen and walked Chih-Fang Pan to load the bases. BA Vollmuth got hit in the shoulder by a 3-1 pitch to force home Brguman for an 8-4 lead before a flyout ended the inning.

The Chiefs got back in the game in the sixth inning against Trivino. Kelly singled to start the inning and was out at second on a fielder's choice off the bat of Castillo. With two down Steve Bean singled to right and Mason Katz launched a 3-run homer on a 3-1 pitch from Trivino. The home run, Katz's team-leading ninth of the season, cut the Beloit lead to 8-7.

Beloit pushed the lead back to 9-7 as Marincov led off the bottom of the sixth with his seventh home run of the season. Stock bounced back to retire the next three hitters with the Chiefs down 9-7 after six innings.

Peoria kept the bats going in the seventh against Blake McMullen as Herrera doubled with one out and moved to third on a single by Kelly. Castillo got the Chiefs to within one run again on a RBI single to left to plate Herrera. Sam Bragg came out of the bullpen with the trying run at second and struck out Kenny Peoples-Walls. With both runners going on the 3-2 pitch to Steve Bean, Vollmuth booted a grounder at first but the ball rolled right to the bag and he recovered to retire the Chiefs.
