Hawkey Stops 22 to Lead Lancers to 1-0 Victory Friday
February 21, 2014 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, IA - The Mystique Community Ice Center has not bee kind to opposing goaltenders over the last four years, so Friday's 1-0 win by the Omaha Lancers over the Dubuque Fighting Saints was a rare occurrence. Hayden Hawkey stopped 22 shots to earn the shutout, becoming only the third opposing goaltender to shutout the Fighting Saints in Dubuque since the club's return to the USHL in 2010. Dubuque dropped its fifth straight contest despite solid goaltending from Kevin Reich who stopped 26 shots in the loss and was named the game's First Star.
The Lancers shutout of Dubuque was the first time the Fighting Saints failed to score at the Mystique Community Ice Center since March 10, 2012 in a 3-0 loss to Sioux City. Dubuque was also shutout at home by Waterloo in a 1-0 loss on March 8, 2011. Hawkey joins former Waterloo goaltender C.J. Motte and former Sioux City netminder Matt Skoff in the exclusive club of netminders to pitch a shutout in Dubuque.
Dubuque's Reich was the far busier of the two goaltenders in the early portion of the game. Dubuque killed a double-minor penalty late in the first period and Reich was the star of the penalty kill, making several acrobatic saves.
The Lancers finally broke the scoreless deadlock late in the second period. With Eric Robinson in the penalty box for Dubuque, Omaha's powerplay struck. Jake Randolph and Tyler Vesel cycled the puck to the right side of the ice. Randolph, the USHL assist leader, fed the puck to Frigo along the goal line. He cut out front, and fired a shot that beat Reich blocker side to make it 1-0 Omaha at 16:03. The goal was Frigo's 15th of the season.
Dubuque threw everything they had at Hawkey in the third period but it provided no results. Dubuque doubled its shot total in the third period, throwing 11 shots on the Omaha net, but Hawkey was strong, kicking aside every attempt. A last attempt by Dubuque saw Reich pulled for an extra attacker late, but the Lancers blocked numerous shots and prevented Dubuque from getting a quality chance to tie the game in the final seconds.
The Lancers outshot Dubuque 27-22 on the evening. Omaha was 1-for-4 on the powerplay while Dubuque was 0-for-1 in the loss. The Fighting Saints are now 26-14-3 on the season and were shutout for only the second time this season. The Fighting Saints were also blanked at Sioux Falls on November 29 in a 3-0 loss.
Tomorrow night, the Fighting Saints are encouraging fans to wear black for the BLACK OUT GAME presented by Truck Country. Dubuque hosts Cedar Rapids in a critical Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup game at 7:05 p.m. The Fighting Saints will be wearing special black uniforms featuring a chrome version of the Fighting Saints "D-Logo" on the front of the uniform. After the game, the jerseys will be auctioned off with all proceeds benefitting the Dubuque Youth Hockey Association. Last year's BLACK OUT GAME jersey auction raised over $15,000 for youth hockey.
Tickets are available for tomorrow night's by calling 563.583.6880 or online at DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
