Omaha Lancers News Release
RALSTON, NE - An Elsinore, Utah native and second-year forward for the Omaha Lancers of the USHL, Nash Worden has committed to play NCAA Division 1 college hockey for the Army Black Knights of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in the Atlantic Hockey Association, beginning in the 2015-16 season, the team announced Friday.
"We are thrilled for Nash to announce his commitment to Army," said Lancers Head Coach and General Manager Brian Kaufman on Friday. "He's a tremendously hard worker and a great teammate and we're excited both for his future at West Point and to have him back in a Lancers uniform next season."
"This was a no-brainer for me," said Worden on Friday. "There are so many benefits in going to West Point. They have top-notch facilities and I liked that the class-sizes are very small. I look forward to a great experience."
Worden's commitment to the Black Knights comes midway through a season in which the physical forward has missed a combined 20 games due to injury, a fact that Worden says, makes his commitment to Army that much more satisfying. "This is my third year [in junior hockey] and I came in this season really hoping to get a scholarship," explained Worden. "To deal with the injuries I've had was tough, but I just had to work my way back and it was awesome to get that call from [Army].A weight is definitely lifted."
After completing his junior career in Omaha in 2014-15, Worden will have at least one familiar face awaiting his arrival at West Point in 2015-16, that of his current teammate and fellow Black Knights recruit, goaltender Cole Bruns. "It's going to be great to have him there," said Worden. "He'll have his freshman year out of the way so he'll give me all the tips and tricks of how to make it through. It'll definitely be a big advantage."
In 23 games played this season, Worden has notched three goals and nine total points with a plus-one rating and 45 penalty minutes. In his career, the 6'0", 205 lb. utility-man has played 74 combined USHL games, all with Omaha, collecting five total goals and 15 combined points over that span.
Next up for the Lancers, it's a 7:35 pm clash at the Mystique Community Ice Center in Dubuque, Iowa on Friday vs. the defending Anderson and Clark Cup Champions, the Dubuque Fighting Saints. Full coverage of Friday's game begins at 7:20 pm on the Lancers' flagship station, "The Mighty" 1290 KOIL, with Lancers broadcaster Tony Brown providing the play-by-play.
