Omaha Lancers News Release
DUBUQUE, IA - In a white-knuckle, tension-racked finale to the two teams' regular season series, the Omaha Lancers outlasted the defending Anderson and Clark Cup champion Dubuque Fighting Saints by a final score of 1-0 on Friday at the Mystique Community Ice Center in Dubuque, Iowa. With the win, the Lancers' fifth consecutive victory, Omaha improved to 32-9-4 overall this season and with 68 points, remain alone in second place in the Western Conference and overall USHL standings, just one point shy of their next opponent, the Waterloo Black Hawks.
Both the Lancers and Fighting Saints were sharp to start the game, trading numerous scoring chances both ways, but despite a four-minute power-play late in the opening frame, Omaha was unable to convert on ten first-period shots and entered the middle stanza mired in a scoreless deadlock.
It took until 16:03 of the second for either side to break the ice, but after a multitude of quality man-advantage chances, Luca Frigo gave Omaha a 1-0 lead on a right-doorstep power-play finish, assisted by Jake Randolph and Tyler Vesel, an edge that stood up for the Lancers heading into the second intermission.
In a scintillating third period in which the smothering Saints attack put 11 pucks on net, Lancers goaltender Hayden Hawkey stood tall to preserve his third career USHL shutout, a 22-save performance that bumped his record this season to 16-2-0.
Next up for the Lancers, it's a Saturday clash with the Waterloo Black Hawks at 7:05 pm at Ralston Arena on "Pink in the Rink Night" featuring specialty pink jerseys that will be auctioned off during the game to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure-Nebraska, presented by Methodist Health System. Full coverage of Saturday's game begins with the "Valpak Pregame Show" at 6:50 pm on the Lancers' flagship station, "The Mighty" 1290 KOIL with Lancers broadcaster Tony Brown providing the play-by-play.
In 2013-14, the five-time Anderson Cup and seven-time Clark Cup Champion Omaha Lancers drop the puck on their 28th season in the USHL.
