
Havoc Signs UMass Defenseman

HUNTSVILLE, AL - Huntsville Havoc head coach Randy Murphy announced today that the team has signed former University of Massachusetts defenseman Kevin Kessler.
"Kevin will add tremendous size and toughness to our defense core," Murphy said. "He has played in one of the top collegiate conferences in the country in Hockey East and for a great program at Massachusetts. We look for Kevin to make a smooth transition to the pro game."
Kessler (6-3, 215) played in 32 games at Massachusetts from 2007-09. He netted one goal and recorded one assist as a stay-at-home defenseman. He also played one season of junior hockey in the EJHL for the New Hampshire Junior Monarchs, where he scored six goals and recorded 15 assists in 48 games.
The Havoc also signed forward Nick Vandenbeld to a tryout agreement.
Vandenbeld (5-8, 175) played in 122 career games at Mercyhurst College from 2006-10. He scored 16 goals and recorded 21 assists. He spent the 2005-06 season with Melfort Mustangs of the SJHL, where he scored 28 goals and recorded 39 assists in 51 games.
"Nick is another first year pro out of the NCAA Division I ranks, having played at Mercyhurst College," Murphy said. "He possesses tremendous speed and is a competitive individual. Nick comes highly recommended from his previous coaches."
