Hartford Blank Louisville and Earn a Point, 0-0 Final

June 3, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Hartford Athletic News Release

An excellent defensive performance from Hartford Athletic was enough to pick up a point at home against Louisville City FC tonight, 0-0 was the final.

The majority of play was spent in the Hartford half through the opening 30 minutes of tonight's match, as Louisville entered their final third 33 times and had four touches in their box. The Green and Blue defended well, however, limiting scoring chances and allowing just one shot on a free kick from Wilson Harris that went wide of the net. Elvis Amoh, who recently returned from injury, was subbed off in the 29th minute for Kyle Edwards after being tended to by the Hartford Athletic training staff.

Athletic were patient in their offensive buildup and generated the best scoring chance of the half in the 34th minute. Juan Pablo Torres delivered a corner kick into the box that was headed and centered by Niall Logue, falling to Antoine Hoppenot. The Hartford forward fired a shot through traffic from just yards in front of the goal, and Louisville keeper Oliver Semmle made a brilliant quick reaction save to keep Hartford off the scoreboard.

The home side stayed on the front foot in the final minutes of the half, creating one more quality scoring chance for Antoine Hoppenot and forcing another save from Semmle. Hoppenot took advantage of a turnover in Louisville's third, made a run into the box and challenged Semmle at the near post. The Louisville keeper made a diving save, denying Hartford the lead just before half time. A strong half for Hartford while being out possessed 63% to 36%, put three shots on target to Louisville's zero.

The two teams remained deadlocked through the first 15 minutes of the second half. Louisville took two shots off target, and forced Joe Rice to parry a dangerous cross over the crossbar. The visitors had a golden opportunity to take the lead off of a Hartford mistake in the 68th minute. Triston Hodge played a ball across Hartford's box that was intercepted by Enoch Mushagalusa, leaving the Louisville defender one-on-one with Joe Rice, but his one-timed shot sailed well over the crossbar.

Hartford began to crack into Louisville's third and create chances close to goal in the later stages of the half. They drew two yellow cards in the final third, one of which led to their best chance of the half in the 83rd minute off of a free kick. Triston Hodge was given space off the free kick and dribbled towards the box, firing a shot from about 30 yards out that fell just wide of the net. The game remained tied as it entered stoppage time and Louisville took the final three shots of the game, two of which were blocked and zero on target. 0-0 was the score at the final whistle.

Joe Rice made his season debut in goal tonight and earned a clean sheet with the help of a disciplined night from his back line. Hartford booted 16 clearances while containing Louisville's offense, who entered their final third 75 times. The result brings Hartford to 2-7-3, they'll go on the road to face Indy Eleven next Saturday, June 10th at 7:00 PM.
