HarbourCats Stretch 'W' Streak to Four
July 11, 2015 - West Coast League (WCL)
Victoria HabourCats News Release
KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. -- The Victoria HarbourCats improved to 12-16 on the season with an 8-5 win Saturday in Klamath Falls, the first game of a double-dip.
The two teams are playing a pair of seven-inning games because of a cancellation due to wet field conditions at historic Kiger Stadium, one of the great old venues in the West Coast League.
The rainout on Friday was the first regular season rainout for the Klamath Falls franchise in five years of operation. They did host the all-star game festivities in July of 2014 that was cancelled due to rain when the skies opened after the home run derby (won by Victoria's Gabe Clark).
The HarbourCats are three losses out of the final playoff spot, with 26 games to play.
The HarbourCats now have won four games in a row, with the nightcap to come. Henry Omana is scheduled to start against Mickey Walker of Klamath Falls.
Shawn Kennedy II got the win in relief, going the final three innings with no hits, runs or walks, and two strikeouts.
The HarbourCats scored six times in the fourth inning to spin the game around, trailing 4-1 going into the inning. The Gems had scored four times in the second inning and the HarbourCats got one back in the third, and then a string of Victoria hits bunched together led to the six-run inning.
Klamath Falls got a run back in the bottom of the fourth on a Ty Wyatt solo shot, but the HarbourCats restored the three-run lead in the top of the sixth inning.
Among the key swings for the HarbourCats, who had five hits, were RBI doubles by Kevin Collard and Jackson Thoreson. The Gems had five hits and made three errors, with the HarbourCats making one error.
HarbourCats starter Dominic Topoozian (Fresno State) went four innings, giving up five hits and five runs, four of them earned, and striking out two without giving up a walk.
The HarbourCats and Gems face off again tonight in the second game, then play a 5:05 pm game Sunday in Klamath Falls. The HarbourCats head off to Medford on Monday for a Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday series before returning home on Thursday, July 17 for Black Press Baseball Card/Victoria Chamber of Commerce Night with the West Division-leading Bellingham Bells in town.
