HarbourCats Drop Finale in Wenatchee

It was hard to spot the bright spots in Thursday's series-ending game in Wenatchee.

The Victoria HarbourCats made three errors and were limited to six hits in a 9-2 loss to the host Applesox, dropping Victoria's record to 20-25 as the team now prepares for a three-game home series with the powerful Bellingham Bells, who have clinched the West Division playoff berth.

Jake Lesinski hit a long home run as part of the HarbourCats offence, but Wenatchee got out to an 8-1 lead through four innings and coasted from there.

Alex Rogers gutted out six innings to keep the pressure off a short-staffed bullpen, giving up 12 hits and nine runs -- but only four of those were earned because of defensive issues at second base and third base. Rogers walked four and struck out two, and the all-star from Nanaimo now sits with a 2-4 record and 3.25 ERA.

Griffin Andreychuk and Hunter Mercado-Hood both were 2-4. First baseman Gabe Clark, who is one homer away from tying the WCL record, was given the night off.

The HarbourCats return home on Friday to play the Bellingham Bells, on Edge Energy Bar Gamenight, with special pre-game ceremonial pitches that sports fans will NOT want to miss -- Jamie Benn, Jordie Benn and Adam Kreek handling the duties, two Olympians and two NHL stars in that trio mix. The game starts at 7:11pm, and tickets are available at www.harbourcats.com/tickets, or at the gate, or at the team office at 1814 Vancouver Street. The game is presented by the Times Colonist.

On Saturday, the game is a celebration of team mascot Harvey's birthday as Mascotlandia, sponsored by Rifflandia and presented by Black Press, takes the spotlight. On Sunday, it's Island Savings $25K Pitch afternoon game (1:05pm), and the two contestants have been selected and will have a chance in mid-game to win the big money.

The HarbourCats head to Walla Walla for a series next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, but return home to close the regular season Friday through Sunday against the Kitsap BlueJackets -- a series that includes the second fireworks night of the season, set for Saturday, August 9.
