Fort Worth Brahmas News Release

Fort Worth - A hat trick by defenseman Matt Hanson helped the Youngstown Steelhounds to a 4-2 win over the Fort Worth Brahmas on Friday night at the Fort Worth Convention Center.

Hanson, a rookie from the University of Alaska-Anchorage, scored the opening goal of the game just 1:48 into the first period, tapping in a beautiful backdoor setup from left wing Jeff Christian. Fort Worth would come back, tying the game less than three minutes later on defenseman Ryan Fairbarn's rebound goal from the right wing side. The goal was Fairbarn's first in a Brahmas uniform since coming to Fort Worth in a January trade from Wichita.

The Brahmas would forge ahead 2-1 midway through the second period when they capitalized on a 5-on-3 powerplay. Fort Worth team captain Wes Mason converted a long cross-ice pass from Fairbarn into a tap in goal from the right side of the Steelhounds goal crease.

The Hounds evened the score at two at the 1:36 mark of the third period. With his team on the powerplay, Hanson slipped down the right wing side from his defensive point position. A tape-to-tape pass from Christian set him up, and he beat Fort Worth goaltender Larry Sterling cleanly for his second goal of the game.

Hanson would complete his hat trick with less than four minutes play in regulation. With Brahmas forward Matt Reynolds in the penalty box because of a hooking infraction, Hanson wristed a seeing-eye shot from between the face off circles that slipped past a screened Sterling. The powerplay goal would prove to be the eventual game-winning tally for Youngstown, as Fort Worth could not muster any third period offense. Steelhounds forward Joey Sewell would set the final score at 4-2 when he scored an empty net goal with just one second left in the game.

Sterling took the loss in net for Fort Worth, allowing three Youngstown goals on 25 shots. Steelhounds goaltender David St. Germain stopped 19 of the 21 shots the Brahmas sent his way to get credit for the win.

The defeat for the Brahmas pushed their winless streak to seven games (0-5-2). Fort Worth now has a 13-27-7 record for the season. The win for the Steelhounds gives the expansion franchise a 19-27-2 mark on the year.

Fort Worth will be in action on Saturday night, February 18, when they travel to West Texas to meet the Odessa Jackalopes at 7:00 p.m. at the Ector County Coliseum. Saturday night's game can be heard live on KHFX Fox Sports 1460 AM with the pregame show beginning at 6:45 p.m.

The Brahmas will return home on Monday, February 20, hosting the Steelhounds again at 6:00 p.m. at the Convention Center. For additional information, please contact the Brahmas team office at (817) 336-4423.

BRAHMAS ROSTER MOVES:

Fort Worth made several roster moves before Friday night's game against Youngstown. Defenseman Vladimir Hartinger and left wing David Silverstone were activated from the injured reserve list and returned to the Fort Worth lineup after extended absences. Left wing Chris Bain, acquired by the Brahmas in a trade with Wichita earlier this week, signed a contract with Fort Worth and made his Brahmas debut. Also, defenseman Drew Terry, a second-year player from Memphis, Tennessee, was signed to a contract and played in the game for the Brahmas. To make room for Terry on the roster, Fort Worth placed forward Noah Katz on waivers. Additionally, forward Derek Seal was moved from the 14-day to the 45-day injured reserve list.
