Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
Corpus Christi, TX - On "Guaranteed Fight Night" Saturday Night, the Corpus Christi Rayz did more than put up a fight against the Austin Ice Bats. They outshot and outchanced their division rivals. Unfortunately for the Rayz, they ran into a hot netminder in Miguel Beaudry and could not solve him. That Rayz outshot Austin 42-26, but Beaudry turned all 42 aside for the shutout as he led the Bats to a 3-0 win. Corpus Christi fell 11 points back from Amarillo and Austin for the final playoff spot in the Southern Conference. The Rayz will look to exact revenge against Austin on the road Tuesday night.
In the first period, Corpus Christi outshot Austin 19-8 but neither team lit the lamp and the teams went into the locker room scoreless at the end of the first period. Fans caught their first bout of action of the night as Caleb Moffat and Britt Dougherty dropped the gloves at 15:23.
In the second period, Austin tallied twice to take the lead in the game. Rookie sensation Michael Tucciarone had a hand in both goals to give Austin the advantage. Tucciarone stickhandled around Rayz goaltender Scott Reid and then dropped the puck off in the crease for Jason Kenyon at 3:43 for Austin's first goal. Just 3:05 later, Tucciarone scored on a tight rebound shot from the lest side of the net. Tucciarone's Southern Conference rookie leading 22nd goal of the season made it 2-0. Austin outshot Corpus Christi 12-7 in the frame.
The Rayz had a great opportunity in the third period to get on the scoreboard when they received a five on three man advantage for a full two minutes, but could not beat Beaudry. The game was delayed with 4:47 left in the third period when the lights in the American Bank Center shut off in the middle of play. During the lengthy stoppage in action, Rayz forward Shawn Legault and Dougherty broke out into a fight at center ice. After a twenty minute delay, the game eventually restarted, but Corpus Christi still could not beat Beaudry. Drew Otten sealed the game for Austin with an empty net goal at 19:22.
The Rayz loss dropped their record to 19-28-2 as they remained in fourth place in the Southeast Division. Reid made 24 saves on 26 shots and suffered the loss. His record fell to 12-15-1. Austin's victory improved the record to 24-22-3 as they remained in a third place tie in the Southern Conference with Amarillo. Beaudry's shutout was his second in as many games against Corpus Christi. He has faced 76 shots in two games vs. Corpus Christi and stopped them all. His record improved to 8-6-1. The Rayz went 0-8 on the power play. Austin went 0-3. The Bats will host the Laredo Bucks Sunday at 4:00pm before hosting Corpus Christi on Tuesday night at 7:30pm.
