January 2, 2019 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Owen Sound Attack News Release

The Attack opened the 2019 chapter of their season tonight at the Bayshore against Midwest divisional rivals the Guelph Storm. The Battle of Highway 6 has been split so far this season, with each team winning twice on home ice. Owen Sound was hoping to keep that streak going and snap their own slide of three in a row.

The game began with an emotional tribute to retired Owen Sound Police Chief Bill Sornberger, who finished 42 years of service this week. The beginning of the first was marked with long sequences of play and minimal stoppages but no team could find the back of the net. Power plays were exchanged and the score remained tied at zeros due to a phenomenal save by netminder Mack Guzda on a Nate Schnarr blast. Shots ended in favour of the Guelph Storm after 1 at 10-8.

The second period began well for the Owen Sound Attack, and Kevin Hancock notched his 29th on a tip from the point by Zach Roberts. Minutes later, Maksim Sushko forced a turnover, got the puck to Hancock in front of the net and he made no mistake making it a 2-0 game with his 30th of the season. As well as the period started, late penalties marred the great Attack effort. Three consecutive calls against the team led to an extended 5-on-3 and eventually Isaac Ratcliffe found the back of the net to cut the lead to 1. The Attack tallied 16 shots in the period to Guelph's 10 and Owen Sound took the overall advantage 24-20.

Heading into the third, Owen Sound would begin on a McDougall Energy penalty kill but were able to kill it off and return to even strength. Back and forth action marked the first ten minutes, but after the Guelph Storm took a penalty with 10 minutes remaining in the game, Hancock struck immediately for his 3rd of the game and a 2-goal lead. The Guelph Storm pushed back and were able to reduce the lead to one after a Toropchenko goal with minutes remaining but that was as close as it would get and the Attack held on to win their first game of 2019.

Your Hatten Home Building Centre Hardest Working Player of the Game as voted by the fans went to Maksim Sushko. The three stars were split between the teams, with Isaac Ratcliffe claiming third star honours, Mack Guzda being awarded 2nd star for his 31 save performance and Kevin Hancock winning 1st star for his stunning night.

The Owen Sound Attack are back in action this Friday as they head to the Kitchener Auditorium to take on the Rangers. Puck drop is at 7:30PM and you can listen to the game on 560 CFOS Terry's Trailer Service Kia of Owen Sound Bear Radio and watch the game on Rogers Channel 53 or OHL Live.=
