St. Lucie Mets News Release
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. - The Jupiter Hammerheads defeated the St. Lucie Mets 4-1 at First Data Field on Friday night.
Jupiter starter Taylor Braley did not allow a run over 5.2 innings. He only gave up three singles while striking out two to get the win.
Colton Hock worked around two walks in the bottom of the ninth to pick up his fifth save.
The Hammerheads scored a run in the first inning on an error and never surrendered the lead.
They added two runs in the fifth inning on a RBI double from catcher Nick Fortes and a two-out RBI single from Cesar Puello for a 3-0 lead.
The Mets snapped a string of 30 consecutive innings without a run when Blake Tiberi scored on Wagner Lagrange's ground out in the eighth inning. Tiberi reached third base after doubling and advancing on wild pitch.
The Hammerheads quickly got the run back in the next inning on a RBI single by Jhonny Santos to go up 4-1.
Jupiter played with two Miami Marlins' rehabbers. Shortstop Miguel Rojas (hamstring) played five innings and went 0 for 3.
Puello (hip), a former St. Lucie Mets in 2011 and 2012, played five innings in center field. He went 2 for 3 with a pair of singles.
Mets starter Joe Cavallaro was good again but did not receive the requisite run support. He held the Hammerheads to three runs (two earned) over five innings. At one point he retired 12 consecutive hitters.
The Mets losing streak was extended to nine games. They have scored just eight runs in the streak (81 innings).
The Mets (35-27, 67-61) and Hammerheads (30-33, 51-75) play the second game of their series on Saturday at First Data Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
