Bats Baffled in Series Opener against Stone Crabs

August 23, 2019 - Florida State League (FSL) - Clearwater Threshers News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - After tossing back-to-back shutouts to finish of their series sweep over the St. Lucie Mets, the Clearwater Threshers could not get a run on the scoreboard in the series opener of the three-game set against the Charlotte Stone Crabs on Friday night at Charlotte Sports Park. The loss, paired with the doubleheader sweep of the Lakeland Flying Tigers over the Tampa Tarpons, drops the Threshers into a tie with the Flying Tigers for the top-spot in the Wild Card race.

Kyle Glogoski (2-2) took the tough-luck loss for Clearwater (64-66, 28-36), as the starter held Charlotte (78-51, 43-20) to just two runs through five innings. The blemishes against the right-hander came on a two-out, RBI double from Joey Roach in the second dinning, and a sacrifice fly by Wander Franco in the fifth.

The New Zealand native has not allowed more than two runs in any of his 18 appearances in 2019, and has not surrendered more than two runs in a game since giving up four - two earned - on July 5 against Tampa.

Austin Ross gave up a solo home run to Garrett Whitley at the start of the seventh inning to extend the deficit to 3-0.

Tommy Romero (12-4) extended his league-lead in wins with six shutout innings. The 22-year-old scattered four hits and struck out five, and lowed his league-leading ERA from 1.99 to 1.89.

Simon Rosenbum-Larson (SV, 8) earned his eighth save in as many chances by striking out all three batters faced in the ninth.

Clearwater's best scoring chance came in the fourth inning after consecutive one-out singles from Simon Muzziotti and Raul Rivas, but Luke Miller went down on strikes and Rafael Marchan popped out to end the visitor's threat.

The Threshers look to bounce back in game two of the three-game series on Saturday night at Charlotte Sports Park. RHP Jack Perkins (0-3, 6.19) gets the call for Clearwater against Charlotte's RHP Tobias Myers (7-1, 2.47). First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m., with coverage beginning at 5:45 p.m. with Threshers Live! The Pregame Show.
