Hammerheads Shut Down by Hurlbut

Jupiter Hammerheads News Release

JUPITER, FL - The month of May has not been kind to the Hammerheads and David Hurlbut's performance on Thursday did not help change that. Hurlbut picked up a complete game win as the Fort Myers Miracle beat Jupiter 4-2 at Roger Dean Stadium.

Hurlbut limited the Hammerheads to two runs on six hits. He pitched to contact striking out just two instead getting 12 of hits outs via groundballs including three double plays turned by the Miracle. Hurlbut also kept runners off base as he didn't issue a walk on the night.

Jupiter starter Scott Lyman had not allowed a run against Fort Myers in 12 innings this season going into the game, but that changed quickly in the first inning. With one out and runners on second and third Mike Gonzales started the scoring when he drove home a pair with a single to center.

Gonzales would later score when Adam Brett Walker sliced a double down the first base line to make it 3-0. The three runs would end up being enough for Fort Myers thanks to Hurlbut's performance.

The Sharks did get a run back in the first inning when Terrence Dayleg singled then Matt Juengel hit a grounder to the third baseman Niko Goodrum. The ball deflected off Goodrum's glove and his throw over to first bounced allowing Dayleg to advance to third. Goodrum was given a pair of errors on the play.

Dayleg would later score when Viosergy Rosa grounded out.

Jupiter would get another run back in the fourth when Juengel and Rosa led off the frame with back-to-back doubles.

It looked the Hammerheads might get more when Colin Moran reached on an infield single but Jesus Solorzano lined into a double play to suck the momentum out of the rally.

Hurlbut would settle in from there as the Hammerheads did not get another hit until Terrence Dayleg led off the ninth with a single but he would retire the next three batters to preserve the win.

Lyman ended up going four innings as he allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits. He was given his second loss of the season.

With the loss the Hammerheads fell to 1-7 in the month of May and 13-21 overall.

Jupiter will head to Fort Myers for a pair of games starting on Friday night. After an off day on Sunday the Sharks will head to Clearwater to take on the Threshers for the first time in 2014. Jupiter will return to Roger Dean Stadium on Friday May 16th to take on the Brevard County Manatees.

Notes: On Thursday the Miami Marlins announced that two Jupiter Hammerheads were honored for their performances in the month of April. First baseman Viosergy Rosa was named the Miami Marlins Minor League Player of the Month and right-handed pitcher Scott Lyman was named the Miami Marlins Minor League Pitcher of the Month.

WP: Hurlbut (2-1)
