Hamilton Surrenders Two Goals in Third Period

ST. JOHN'S, NF - Matt Stajan scored a shorthanded goal with 5:58 remaining in the third period to give the St. John's Maple Leafs a 3-2 victory over the Hamilton Bulldogs on Wednesday night at Mile One Stadium.

The Maple Leafs opened the scoring at the 12:22 mark of the first period when David Ling picked up a loose puck in the Bulldogs zone and fired a shot off the crossbar and into the Bulldogs goal. Kyle Wellwood and Harold Druken earned assists on the play. The Bulldogs surrendered the first goal of the game for just the first time in the past five contests.

Steve Ott evened the score 1-1 for the Bulldogs with his eighth goal of the season at 12:48 of the second period. Adding assists on Ott's goal were Duncan Milroy and Chris Higgins.

The Bulldogs would go ahead 2-1 with 5:41 remaining in the second period as Dan Jancevski ripped a high shot past Maple Leafs goaltender Jean-Sebastien Aubin. Veteran forward Gavin Morgan set up Jancevski for his second goal of the season.

However that would be all the scoring for the Bulldogs on Wednesday.

St. John's tied the game 2-2 at 10:58 of the third period with a goal by Jeremy Williams. The Maple Leafs would then take the lead for good at 14:02 with a shorthanded goal by Matt Stajan.

In goal, Dan Ellis made 18 saves for the Bulldogs, and took the loss in his second consecutive start. Jean-Sebastien Aubin stopped 35 shots and rebounded for the victory, after suffering the loss against the Bulldogs on Tuesday.

On the power play the Bulldogs were 0 for 4. The Maple Leafs did not score on five opportunities with the man advantage. The Bulldogs have not surrendered a power-play goal in four consecutive games.

The Bulldogs and Maple Leafs will next meet on Saturday, January 8th at 7:00 p.m. when they face-off at Copps Coliseum.

The Hamilton Bulldogs next action will take place on Friday, January 7th as they host the Grand Rapids Griffins (affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings) at Copps Coliseum.
