Hamilton Bulldogs News Release
The Hamilton Bulldogs have announced that Hamilton's AHL professional team name will remain Bulldogs, while the uniforms will switch to the Montreal Canadiens colours of âBlue, White & Red' beginning in the 2003-04 season, as was selected by Hamilton AHL hockey fans.
"We are pleased that the people of Hamilton are excited about the Montreal Canadiens affiliation, as evidenced by the overwhelming support to change our colours to blue, white and red," said Hamilton Bulldogs President, Steve Katzman. "When we wear next year's home jersey on Sunday, March 23rd versus the St. John's Maple Leafs, it will signify a new chapter for pro hockey in Hamilton, and specifically a new direction for the Hamilton Bulldogs organization."
Over 100,000 votes were made by Hamilton AHL hockey fans in the âYou Make the Call' campaign at Hamilton area Tim Hortons stores, and on-line at www.hamiltonbulldogs.com. Fans were encouraged to fill out ballots and choose one of three team names: âBulldogs', âCanadiens' or âHabs'; as well the colour scheme the team will wear: âBlue, White & Red' (Montreal Canadiens) or âBlue, White, Red & Bronze' (previous). Write in responses for both the team name and colours were encouraged and tabulated as well.
"When we purchased the team back in the summer and were successful in attaining the Montreal Canadiens affiliation, the ownership group promised from the outset that the team name and colours would be decided by the community of Hamilton," said Hamilton Bulldogs LP Chairman, Tony Battaglia. "We are proud that the people have chose the name Bulldogs and the colours of the Montreal Canadiens."
"The Montreal Canadiens are very proud to have our AHL affiliate club based in Hamilton," stated Montreal Canadiens President, Pierre Boivin. "As well, we are honoured that Hamilton hockey fans chose the Canadiens colours of blue, white and red, which the Bulldogs will wear for years to come."
Fans will have the opportunity to see the Bulldogs will wear the new âblue, white & red' jerseys for one time only this season, when they host the St. John's Maple Leafs on Sunday, March 23rd at 2:00 p.m. The Bulldogs jerseys worn in the game on Sunday will be auctioned on the internet at a later date.
