Memphis, Tenn. - Mark Hamilton delivered a game-winning single in the ninth inning as the Memphis Redbirds (41-61) won 9-8 over the Oklahoma City RedHawks (58-44) before 5,958 at AutoZone Park Monday night.
With the loss, the RedHawks were swept for the second time this season and had to settle for a 4-4 road trip. They never led during their entire stay in Memphis.
Tied 8-8 in the bottom of the ninth, Juan Abreu (2-3) walked both Shane Robinson and Eugenio Velez to start the inning. With one out, Memphis pulled off a double steal.
Even with first base open, the RedHawks elected to pitch to Hamilton. He lined a 3-2 pitch in left field to give the Redbirds their fifth-straight victory.
The RedHawks trailed by as many of five runs, but were able to pull even on pinch-hit, two-run homer by Fernando Martinez in the eighth. The RedHawks stranded the go-ahead runner in scoring position in both the eighth and ninth innings.
One day after going 5-for-5 with five RBIs, Steven Hill stayed hot for Memphis on Monday. He started the scoring with a two-run double in the first. In his next at-bat in the third, he hit a grand slam for the second straight day to make it 6-1.
The RedHawks shot back with four runs in the fourth. Jimmy Paredes and Brad Snyder each drove in runs, and Matt Dominguez finished the rally with a two-run double.
Matt Adams went deep in the fifth to put the Redbirds back up by two runs.
Mike Hessman cut the lead to 7-6 in the seventh on an RBI double. The RedHawks had two on with two outs when Dominguez sent sharp line drive toward the middle, but second baseman Pete Kozma was able to catch it to end the inning.
The Redbirds were able to extend their lead in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double by Hamilton.
Eduardo Sanchez (2-3) tossed 1.1 scoreless innings, and earned the win for the Redbirds.
The RedHawks begin an eight-game homestand Tuesday night against the Iowa Cubs at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are available through the RedHawks box office on S. Mickey Mantle Drive, by calling (405) 218-1000, or through okchredhawks.com.
Live coverage begins at 6:35 p.m. on AM 1340 The Game, 1340thegame.com, or through the free IHeartRadio mobile app.
