New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

Metairie, LA - New Orleans Zephyrs right-hander J.D. Martin was named the Pacific Coast League's Pitcher of the Week for July 16-22, the league announced Monday.

Martin put together two strong starts last week as he held the Iowa Cubs and Nashville Sounds in check. On Monday in Iowa, the right-hander earned the win by going seven innings and allowing just four hits and one run while striking out four. In his follow-up start on Saturday against the Sounds he took a no-decision after going five innings, allowing one run on two hits while striking out seven. His 11 strikeouts to zero walks showed excellent control, and his just six hits and two runs in 12 innings led to a 1.50 ERA and a 0.50 WHIP.

Martin, born in Ridgecrest, California, was a first-round draft pick by the Cleveland Indians in 2001. After eight seasons in the Cleveland organization, he signed a contract with the Washington Nationals and made his Major League debut for them on July 20 th, 2009, against the New York Mets. In December 2011, Martin signed with the Miami Marlins and has gone 5-7 in 17 starts for the New Orleans Zephyrs.

Martin is the third Zephyrs pitcher to earn the PCL's weekly award, joining Wade LeBlanc (May 14- 20) and Tom Koehler (July 11-17). New Orleans is the only PCL club to have three different pitchers win the award, from a pitching staff that leads the league with a 3.90 team ERA.

Oklahoma City RedHawks infielder Jimmy Pardes earned the weekly honor as the PCL's top hitter, batting .500 with three home runs and nine RBI in seven games.

The Zephyrs' 12-game homestand continues with a four-game set against the defending PCL champion Omaha Storm Chasers, beginning Tuesday at 7 p.m. For more information or for tickets, call the Zephyrs box office at (504) 734-5155.
