Lancaster Stormers News Release
Josh Hall picked up his franchise record seventh consecutive victory, a 13-1 thumping of the Somerset Patriots Thursday evening at TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, NJ.
Hall (8-2) scattered four singles over 6 2/3 innings while walking one and striking out five.
Oddly, it was Somerset that scored first. J.R. Hopf led off the third with a pop fly up the first base line. A stiff wind blowing toward right field pushed it on catcher Jed Morris, who dropped it for an error. David Housel popped to shortstop for the first out. Wayne Lydon slapped a ball back off Hall's glove. The right-hander chased the ball down toward first base and made a lunging shovel toss to first for the out. Tim Raines, Jr. lined a single into right, Somerset's first hit, to drive in the run.
The Barnstormers misfired on some early opportunities to score, but took the lead in the fifth off Jesse Darcy (1-7). Jed Morris led off with a home run to right, tying the game. Two outs later, Michael Woods singled to left and moved ahead on a wild pitch. A double roped into left center by Jason Perry gave the Barnstormers the lead.
That lead kept being stretched. Doubles by Reggie Taylor and Morris added one run in the top of the sixth. In the seventh, Bryant Nelson walked and moved up on a passed ball. Michael Woods bunted toward the mound, and reliever Carlos Hines' throw to third arrived late. Perry grounded a single into right field, scoring Nelson and sending Woods to third. Aaron Herr's double play grounder tacked on one more.
A scare would face the Barnstormers in the bottom of the seventh. Hall's string of 11 consecutive outs ended when Elliott Ayala rolled a single into center. Hopf followed with a blooper into center, and Hall issued his only walk of the night, putting David Housel aboard on four pitches. With Wayne Lydon coming to the plate as the tying run, Lancaster went to Charlie Weatherby. Lydon got to a 3-1 count before popping out to Mulhern at first on a 3-2 pitch.
From there, the Barnstormers went berserk. Mulhern started the eighth with a single to right. Lloyd Turner clubbed a two-run homer to the opposite field, and Morris launched his second homer of the night. Five more runs came across in the ninth, three on a homer to dead center by Gaetti.
Weatherby stayed in the game and earned his first save.
The two clubs meet again on Friday evening when Ben Fritz takes the hill at 7:05 against Justin Jones (3-4).
