Hall, Popup Lead Shorebirds Past Power

CHARLESTON, WV - The Delmarva Shorebirds rode another lights-out start from DL Hall and a key West Virginia Power error to a 4-1 win on Monday night at Appalachian Power Park.

Hall (2-5), who earlier in the day earned his second straight South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week award, allowed one run on three hits over six innings of work while walking three and striking out a career-high 10. The Orioles' No. 4 prospect saw his scoreless streak come to an end at 17.1 innings but recovered and lowered his ERA to 2.44.

Beau Susler (4-5) took the tough loss out of the bullpen, giving up an unearned run on two hits in 1.2 innings. Max Knutson notched his first save with three perfect innings after Hall, punching out three along the way.

The Power (12-12, 49-41) struck against Hall in the bottom of the second. Deon Stafford led off with a double, then after back-to-back strikeouts, Ryan Peurifoy drew a full-count walk to keep the inning alive. Jesse Medrano follwed with a line drive single to center, scoring Stafford to snap Hall's streak and put West Virginia up 1-0. Fabricio Macias got hit on the knee by the next pitch to load the bases, but Hall got Oneil Cruz to fly out to shallow left and limit the damage.

The Shorebirds (16-9, 51-41) struggled early against Power starter Max Kranick, who began his night with five scoreless innings. Delmarva finally got Kranick to crack in the sixth, though. Kirvin Moesquit led off with a walk, stole second base, and took third when the throw to try and get him scooted into center. After a groundout, Cadyn Grenier muscled a single to left over the drawn-in infield, tying the game at 1-1.

Zach Jarrett followed with his own sharp single to knock Kranick out of the game, but Susler came in and got Trevor Craport to ground into a double play to end the rally. Kranick endured a no-decision after giving up one run on four hits over 5.1 innings, walking one and striking out nine.

Hall finished his night strong, retiring the final six in a row and taking a grounder to first base himself to end the sixth, but the Shorebirds needed a run in the seventh to put him in line to win.

With two out, Will Robertson stroked a single to left center, then Ben Breazeale followed with his own base knock to put two on. Moesquit hit a routine fly ball to shallow left, but shortstop Cruz called off left fielder Fabricio Macias, and the ball kicked off of the heel of Cruz's glove and fell harmlessly to the turf. Robertson raced around to score and give Delmarva a gift of a 2-1 lead.

The Shorebirds gave Knutson some breathing room in the ninth. Branden Becker led off with a walk, then Robertson doubled him over to third. Breazeale served an 0-2 pitch into right for a base hit, scoring Becker, and Moesquit followed with a single of his own to bring in Robertson and make it 4-1.

Knutson slammed the door in the ninth, striking Peurifoy out on eight pitches to seal the deal.

Robertson sparked the Shorebird offense with his third straight three-hit game, going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs. Breazeale finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Moesquit bounced back by going 1-for-3 with a walk, run, RBI, and league-leading 37th stolen base.

Stafford doubled and scored for the Power's only run and one of their mere three hits.

With wins in five of their first six games on the road trip, the Shorebirds wrap up the weeklong swing on Tuesday afternoon. Jhon Peluffo (3-4, 5.95) takes the hill for Delmarva against West Virginia's Hunter Stratton (3-3, 5.56). First pitch is set for 12:05 p.m., and pregame coverage on Fox Sports 960 AM and the MiLB First Pitch App begins at 11:50 with Will DeBoer on the call.
