July 16, 2018 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Charleston RiverDogs are now 0-7 since a season-best four-game winning streak as the Hickory Crawdads defeated them, 4-2, to claim the four-game series in front of 4,081 at Joe Riley Park on Monday night.
Charleston (45-46, 12-11) took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on a Welfrin Mateo two-run single that plated outfielders Frederick Cuevas and Leonardo Molina. The lead was just the second that Charleston has claimed during the seven-game losing streak after taking a 7-4 advantage in Sunday's defeat.
The Dogs' lead lasted less than an inning as Hickory (44-48, 14-10) bounced back with a three-run outburst in the fifth with the help of three extra-base hits. Right-hander Reiver Sanmartin left in the frame, as Holy City reliever Austin DeCarr came in to strike out Pedro Gonzalez, leading to Hickory manager Matt Hagen's ejection. Opposing teams now have eight innings with three or more runs against the RiverDogs during the losing streak.
After five extra-base hits on Monday, Hickory has 18 in the first three games of the series. On Sunday, the RiverDogs allowed a season-high seven doubles, and eight extra-base knocks, tied for a season-worst.
Second baseman Oswaldo Cabrera went 2-for-4, including his first triple. The 19-year-old knocked third base out of the anchor position on his triple, a play that Hickory third baseman Justin Jacobs disputed and was ejected for. Cabrera is 12 for his last 34 (.353) at the plate over an eight-game hitting streak.
The seven-game losing streak is Charleston's longest since dropping eight straight twice in 2014, with the most recent spanning from June 27-July 4.
Ballpark Fun
It was a Monday Dog Day down at The Joe. Fans and their four-legged friends made their way to the ballpark on what was also National Get Your Dog Out of the House Day.
Upcoming
The Tuesday series finale is Big Splash Day at Riley Park. The RiverDogs are turning the stadium into a waterpark for the 12:05 start as Charleston right-hander Deivi Garcia (1-3, 4.44) battles righty Noah Bremer (3-2, 4.14). Tuesday's contest will be on MiLB.TV with audio streaming live at riverdogs.com and the RiverDogs' TuneIn radio station.
RiverDogs single-game tickets, including options to the Riley Park Club, are now available for the 2018 campaign, the club's 25th season as the RiverDogs and their "175th season in dog years." Ticket information can be secured by contacting the box office at (843) 577-DOGS (3647) or online at www.riverdogs.com/tickets.
