Hall, Medchill Lead Thunder Past Phils, 1-0

(Trenton, NJ) - Shaeffer Hall tossed seven shutout innings and Neil Medchill hit a sixth inning home run to push the Trenton Thunder past the Reading Phillies, 1-0, Thursday night in front of 7,886 fans at Waterfront Park for the team's season-high-matching sixth straight win. Hall (8-6) scattered seven hits and struck out five while Medchill hit his third long ball with Trenton as the Thunder (58-39) moved a season-high 19 games above .500.
Mario Hollands (2-4) pitched brilliantly for the Phillies, who were shutout for a third consecutive game. He retired 14 consecutive Trenton batters before Medchill hit his home run to right, a line drive with one out in the sixth that just sailed over the fence. Hollands would work 7.2 innings and allow five hits while striking out two.
Hall worked out of a bases loaded, no-out jam in the first inning by inducing a pop out from Leandro Castro and a double play grounder from Miguel Abreu. He also stranded a pair of runners in the second and fourth innings, then finished strong by retiring the final five batters he faced.
Ryan Pope pitched a perfect eighth inning, then Jon Meloan pitched out of trouble in the ninth to earn his fourth save. After the first two runners reached in the inning, Sebastian Valle attempted to sacrifice but bunted into a 2-5-3 double play started by catcher J.R. Murphy. Meloan then fanned Jiwan James to end the game.
The Thunder and Phillies continue the four-game series with game two Friday night, as first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. Trenton All-Star right-hander Brett Marshall (10-3, 3.00) is slated to start against righty Jonathan Pettibone (7-7, 3.61).
