B-Mets Outlast Baysox in 10 Innings

Bowie, Md. - The Binghamton Mets outlasted the Baysox 4-3 in a game that started out as a pitchers duel and turned into a back and forth affair with two lead changes in the final three innings Thursday night.

Baysox left-handed starting pitcher Rick Zagone pitched seven innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out two batters and walking three in the no decision. Both starting pitchers were on the top of their game as both teams combined for just three hits through the first four innings.

"[Rick] pitched pretty well tonight," said Pitching Coach Kennie Steenstra. "The only thing he had trouble with was the left-handers; he didn't do a very good job against them. He did do a nice job against the right-handers and he got a couple double play balls and some ground ball outs that helped him out a lot. He pitched down in the zone and he pitched to contact."

Twice the Baysox were able to take the lead, but each time the B-Mets scored in the next half inning to end the team's advantage. The four left-handed hitters in the B-Mets lineup caused trouble as they batted 5-for-13 with two RBI, three walks and a hit batter.

"You have to get holds after a score," said Manager Gary Kendall. "You have to get tough and physical and make plays. We didn't do a really good job with lefty-lefty matchups and in a tight game that comes back to haunt you."

The Baysox broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning against Binghamton starter Mark Cohoon. Shortstop Manny Machado hit a lead off double to left field and moved to third base when first baseman Rhyne Hughes singled to left field. Designated hitter Caleb Joseph grounded into a double play, but plated Machado to give the Baysox a 1-0 lead.

Binghamton came right back to tie the game in the top of the sixth against Zagone. Reese Havens hit a lead off double to left field and scored on a single to center field by Wilmer Flores to tie the game 1-1.

The B-Mets jumped into the lead in the top of the seventh inning. Jefry Marte hit a lead off single to left field and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Dustin Martin. Marte scored from second base when Juan Centeno reached on a throwing error by second baseman Jonathan Schoop with two outs to make the score 2-1.

The Baysox took advantage of some mistakes by the B-Mets to take the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. Joseph hit a lead off single to left field and Antoan Richardson, pinch-hitting for center fielder Jai Miller, reached on a bunt pop to the pitcher. Catcher Brian Ward moved both runners with a sacrifice bunt and Brad Holt then replaced Cohoon on the mound. Attempting to intentionally walk Schoop, Holt threw a wild pitch that allowed Joseph to score from third base and advanced Richardson to third base. With Ty Kelly batting, Holt then committed a throwing error on a pickoff attempt at first base that allowed Richardson to score and give the Baysox a 3-2 lead.

Binghamton came right back to tie the game in the top of the ninth inning against Baysox reliever Chris Petrini. Marte hit a lead off single to left field and moved to second base on a one out bunt single by Sean Kazmar. Centeno followed with a single up the middle to plate Marte and tie the game 3-3.

The B-Mets retook the lead in the top of the 10th inning. Havens hit a lead off single to the pitcher and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Flores. With two outs, Allan Dykstra hit a double down the right field line to score Havens and give Binghamton a 4-3 lead.

Petrini pitched three innings and allowed two runs on six hits while striking out three batters in the loss.

Robert Carson earned the win for Binghamton, pitching the final one and two-thirds innings and allowing one hit while striking out three batters.

RHP Zach Clark (8-4, 3.64) is scheduled to take the mound for the Baysox tomorrow as they play game two in a four game series against the Binghamton Mets. He will be opposed by RHP Zack Wheeler (9-4, 2.39).

The Baysox are home through Wednesday, July 25 for a seven game homestand. The activities include Heroes Night Friday, July 20 during a game starting at 7:05 p.m., Superhero Night Saturday, July 21 during a game starting at 6:35 p.m. and an appearance by TNA Impact Wrestler Zema Ion Sunday, July 22 during a game starting at 6:05 p.m.
