Gwinnett Upended by Durham, 10-6

DURHAM, NC - The Durham Bulls (6-1) pounded Gwinnett Braves (4-3) pitching for 14 hits and swept the three-game series with a 10-6 win Wednesday afternoon at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

The Braves had the lead twice in this game, but neither time could hold on.

The Braves got on the board early, as Corey Wimberly led off the game with a walk, stole second base and scored on a single to center by Joey Terdoslavich, making 1-0.

The Braves would add another run in the top of the second to go up 2-0. Todd Cunningham singled, moved to second on a Chris Archer balk and scored on a double to left by Scott Kazmar.

Despite the great start, Braves starting pitcher, Sean Gilmartin had trouble with the strike zone and would allow an unearned run in the bottom of the third, as he walked Jason Bourgeois with the bases loaded and two outs. Gilmartin would then give up the 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third when he served up a two-run homer to Bulls' first baseman Leslie Anderson.

Gwinnett retook the lead in the top of the fourth. Alden Carrithers, playing in his first game as a G-Brave led off with a single, moved to third on a single to right by Jose Yepez and scored on another Kazmar double. Yepez came around to score on an RBI groundout by Wimberly, giving the G-Braves a 4-3 lead.

However, that would be the last time the G-Braves would lead, as Durham would score seven runs over the next three innings off the Braves bullpen. Anderson hit another two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to put Durham back on top 5-4. The Bulls put the game out of reach in the next two frames, scoring five more runs to take a 10-4 lead. Bourgeois had the decisive blow, as he hit a bases-clearing double in the seventh inning off of reliever Yohan Flande, puching the lead to six.

The Braves rebounded with two late runs. One came off the bat of Ernesto Mejia, as he hit his team-leading fourth homer of the season to cut the lead to 10-5. In the ninth inning, Joe Terdoslavich tripled home Tyler Pastornicky, who reached base on a hit by pitch, to make it 10-6. However, that would be it as the Bulls finished the series sweep of the G-Braves.

Gilmartin went 4.0 innings, allowing five hits, three runs, two earned, five walks and two strikeouts. Carpenter (L, 1-1) picked up the loss in two innings of relief by giving up six hits, three earned runs while striking out two.

For Durham, Archer (W, 2-0) worked five innings for the win. He gave up seven hits and four earned runs while walking one and striking out seven.

Offensively, the Braves were led by Terdoslavich who went 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs. Cunningham, Carrithers, Kazmar and Pastornicky each had two hits.

The Bulls were paced by Bourgeois who was 3-for-3 with four RBIs and Anderson went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two homers.

The Braves move on to Charlotte for a two games series against the Knights, the Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. Game one will be Thursday night at Knights Stadium. RHP David Hale (1-0, 3.60) will pitch for Gwinnett as he will matchup against RHP Andre Rienzo (0-1, 9.00). Tony Schiavone will have the call on WDUN AM 550/FM 102.9 with a 7:15 p.m. first pitch.
