Atlanta Gladiators News Release
The Gwinnett Gladiators regular season home opener for their ninth season in the ECHL, the Premier "AA" Hockey League, is set for Friday, October 21st at the Gwinnett Arena at 7:35 p.m. against the Greenville Road Warriors.
The Gladiators will play a pair of games against Greenville during their regular season home opening weekend at the Gwinnett Arena and will follow up Friday's tilt against the Road Warriors with a 7:05 p.m. start on Saturday, October 22nd.
"We are excited to begin our ninth season at the Gwinnett Arena," said Gladiators President Steve Chapman. "We have extended our lease agreement at the Gwinnett Arena and are looking forward to continuing our great relationship with the Gwinnett Center staff."
The Gwinnett Arena will remain the home of the Gwinnett Gladiators for the next three years after the team extended its lease agreement with the Gwinnett Center on Tuesday, May 10, 2011. The Gladiators have called the Gwinnett Arena home for the past eight years following the completion of construction of the state-of-the-art facility located on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth in 2003. The Gladiators played their first game in the ECHL at the Gwinnett Arena on October 24, 2003.
Gwinnett served as the ECHL affiliate of the Atlanta Thrashers for the past eight seasons and saw a handful of former players lace up the skates for the Thrashers. The Gladiators will remain in Gwinnett and have begun the process of securing new NHL and AHL affiliation agreements following the conditional relocation of the Atlanta Thrashers to Winnipeg, Manitoba.
The remainder of the Gladiators 72 game schedule for the 2011-12 season has been released by the league and will be announced at a later date. The Gladiators will play 36 home games at the Gwinnett Arena and 36 road games from October through March.
The Gladiators are members of the ECHL, the Premier "AA" Hockey League and play all home games at the 11,355-seat Arena at Gwinnett Center, located just off I-85 on Sugarloaf Parkway in Duluth.
